    Flock not laying

They're getting a 17% layer feed from a local feed store, though we've also tried a different feed store's layer feed without luck. Do you have a favorite brand? They don't regularly get treats.

    Flock not laying

The older ones haven't laid since July/August of 2022. I'll definitely watch for feathers!

    Flock not laying

I like the idea of a trail cam, though honestly it would be needed more at night. They are in an enclosed, locked coop at night, so unless it's banging up against the coop they aren't likely to know there's anything there. One for inside the coop is a good idea too.

    Flock not laying

But all of them? All at once? They younger ones really never laid well and shouldn't the older birds still be laying, at least occasionally? I've had them molt before, but not all of the flock, all at once and taking months at a time. We did have a terrible heat wave, but that's not really...

    Flock not laying

I currently have 14 chickens: three that are five years old, four that are 18-months old, six that are about five months old and a rooster. Our older girls (orpington, easter egger, plymouth rock) were rock solid layers, laying all year and nearly every day. When they had their other three...

Chickens laying under coop instead of in nesting boxes

All great advice. We can get to the areas under the coop if we must, just prefer not to do it for eggs. They used the nesting boxes for months until..........they just stopped. I really hesitate to block off or make the area under the coop less appealing. Our coop is about 2' off the ground...

    Young roosters raping hens :(

I don't keep aggressive roos and unless you have a very large flock, three roos are way too many (I think the number is something like 1:20 or 1:25 roos-to-hens). Unless you have a very large flock to keep three roos, they will need to go (I rehome mine).

Chickens laying under coop instead of in nesting boxes

I have ten hens, five older and five younger. All and summer, all 10 laid in the nesting boxes. Then the older five stopped laying and now the younger hens are laying under the coops where we can't get to the eggs. The nesting boxes were a problem because two hens would get in at night and...

Hen died, concerned for other chickens

Thank you both for the good info and the condolences.

Hen died, concerned for other chickens

I have 13 chickens in total, five of which are 3.5 years old. Most of the 3.5 year olds have stopped laying, but are otherwise seemingly happy. I noticed one of my girls looking droopy about three days ago. She was always pretty lively, so it was pretty noticeable. Wasn't standing tall and...

Almost all stopped laying, what's up?!

I'll try to include a timeline, only because I wonder if any of these events contributed. I have 5 hens, all 2.5 years old (plymouth rock, rhode island, buff orpington, easter egger, black sexlink). I was usually getting 3 to 4 eggs per day. In spring, we added three new chicks to the flock...

Broody Hen: Hatch, Break or Leave Alone???

Like the chicks at the store, or are those too old? I have to figure out where to put them too. Can they be in boxes inside the coop, or do I need to move them to an entirely separate structure?

Broody Hen: Hatch, Break or Leave Alone???

Went out to get eggs........now I have TWO broody hens, so no open nest boxes for the other three hens.

Broody Hen: Hatch, Break or Leave Alone???

I have a broody buff orpington (she's been on the nest 3 days). Eggs are not fertile (no rooster). She is taking up one of the nesting boxes, which is causing troubles for the remaining hens (they all tend to favor the nest she's in). She has switched sides (nest boxes) a couple of times, so...

Opinions of cold climate chicken keepers needed

The cold blast is here! I'm in Kansas, so we are not expected to be as good as those of you further north. Our low will be -4 (actual air temperature). We do put some supplemental heat in the coop. Currently, it is 12F outside, the coop is 21F. It stays right around 8/9 degrees above the...

Opinions of cold climate chicken keepers needed

I see people referring to the ambient temperature a lot, but not necessarily the temp inside the coop. Our coop is not insulated. It is raised up off the ground and we've enclosed the space under the coop with straw. We've also placed several bales inside the run, to give them some wind...

Clip or Don't Clip - Broken Beak

One of my girls got into a scuffle with a rooster about 5-6 weeks ago. She broke her beak, which bled like crazy. Now, the top beak is quite a bit shorter than the bottom. I am trying to decide if I should trim the bottom, or leave well enough alone. 1 - she is SUPER flighty and clipping it...

    Monster egg......then nothing

I don't actually know who laid it, but all of them are behaving normally. I will keep an eye on them and give calcium if I notice the behavior your describe. Would giving them oyster shell help? The shells have been nice a thick, so I haven't added oyster shell yet.
