I'm cross-posting an entry I just wrote on my blog because frankly, it's too painful to write out twice. But I'm hoping someone else can learn from my mistakes and avoid this horrible price I'm having to pay.
I have 60 birds to do, but tonight was a test with only six. It wasn't bad at all. I wrote up a blog entry with pictures.
And I can't get the link to work.
Quail processing
I've got two Midget White poults that I hatched from lotsapaints' eggs a week ago.
Yesterday I caught them walking around in a full strut in the brooder! It was hilarious; they don't even have tail feathers yet! I'm going to work on getting some pictures of them doing it today. I've had some...
I don't believe this. I'm a contract operator for small water systems. I'm right at the point where I need to pick up a few more to make up for one reducing my hours.
I got a call on Friday, and played phone tag until last night. When we finally connected, the lady had four small systems that...
Well, here's an upside to having a rather messy garden. Several naughty hens have been hiding their eggs in there all spring and summer. Sometimes I'd find the nest, but I hadn't lately.
Until tonight, when I went out to discover an Easter Egger hen with thirteen babies in my compost heap! I...
I finally caved and processed my BBB tom turkey. He was a year old and getting too big for his bones. Once it was almost all over, I had a nasty surprise - a giant abscess right in the breast. We chose not to eat him, after doing some research, and I feel horrible about that. Of course, I'd have...
I had 24 Blue Laced Red and Silver Laced Wyandotte eggs in the incubator. Last night was lockdown, and for that, I move them over to a Little Giant for hatching. I was candling as I went, and set aside three that seemed to be quitters.
My son and I like to open the quitters and see what stage...
My husband picked me up a couple of BBB turkey poults from the feed store when I was feeling blue. It was very nice. I've raised them with my chickens, planning to eat them. Actually, I was planning to slaughter tomorrow. They're about six months old.
But they're so personable. I suspect I have...
After a complete failure and then a two out of twelve hatch, I finally got fourteen of sixteen eggs to lockdown. Three have popped out today, which is a hair early.
I'm hatching shipped eggs - half Mottled Houdans and half BLR Wyandottes with possible SL Wyandotte crosses in an LG with a...
We finished the outside of our coop today. We call it the chicken barn because of the paint job. My husband made it from garden shed plans and expanded it a bit to use pre-cut studs. It's 10x10, with 8-foot walls. Haven't done anything with the interior yet, although I'm collecting wide branches...
Could someone be so kind as to give me a hand identifying this chick? I talked Tractor Supply into letting me buy just two chicks last night, on the premise that my husband wouldn't notice two more in the brooder while he definitely would notice six. I came clean to him anyway, but the girls at...
Hi there, my name is Jules. I grew up having a few laying hens, but of course, I wasn't in charge of them much as a kid. I always wanted to get back to having chickens as an adult, so when we bought a house on an acre, we designated about a tenth for a chicken yard. My husband likes to...
