That's fascinating! This is why I love this website. So full of great info! I'll have to keep watching the combs I guess since they still are barely showing anything yet. Do you have any hunches on gender?
Ok I posted about these guys or girls a couple days ago and finally was able to snap a couple pictures, sorry they aren't the best of quality. They like to hide behind their mom whenever I get too close! These are about 6 weeks old and supposedly Americana mix bantams. They hatched out of...
I have a mixed batch of chicks that my broody hen hatched out. They are about 5 weeks old now and the standard chicks in the bunch are already recognizably male, but my bantams have no visible combs yet. Do they take longer to show comb/wattles or is it likely that they are pullets?
It is most likely a leghorn mix. She had tons of different free ranging chickens on the ranch I bought the eggs from. These were hatched from my broody hen :). Thanks for the input. I will try to update as they get older and let you know what we find!
This chick is a mix of goodness knows what. I had to help him/her out of the egg after 24 hours of no progress and he/she is thriving! Looking like it's got a huge comb already though...you experts think rooster?
I've been stalking this thread for a while and finally am wanting to post to get some reassurance that I'm doing thinks correctly. I have a first time broody Cochin hen that's sitting on 5 eggs and we are on day 19 of incubation. I've planned on moving her to a 3x3 cage with her chicks for at...
I'm finally letting my Cochin hen become a mother by placing some fertilized eggs under her from someone I found locally. Just a couple questions, but if you have any important advice I would love to hear it.
- How many eggs should I put under if I'd like 2-3 chicks?
- should I put the eggs...
They're about 5 months old. Well, it look like we might get a couple extra birds to make up the difference in egg production. I'm still getting 2-3 eggs per day with 3 birds though so not bad!
Awesome! I'm close to Vancouver, WA and looking for Cochin pullets hatched this year or other quiet breeds that were hatched this year and ready to go outside. Looking for probably 2 pullets. Send me a message if you've got something like that or suggestions!
My pullets just started laying eggs for about a week and a half ago and they are really small! About 60% the size of a normal egg from the store. Is this normal? Will they get bigger or do Cochins just lay smaller eggs?
She was on the move so I'm sorry that her head is all blurry, but I wanted to ask what color this Hatchery Quality Cochin is? She is definitely my favorite of the bunch!
I have 6 pullets that are about 7 weeks old and when I went to check on them the other evening they had put themselves to bed in their coop. This of course was when I still had the heat lamp on in the coop. Today I decided to take the heat lamp away because they are all feathered out now and...
