I do it the old fashioned way. A wire cage with a light bulb hanging down. Covered with a dark sheet. Newspaper and paper towels on the bottom. Just raised 9 from November hatch and now I have 7 in the same cage.
I started raising chickens/bantams when I was just a kid and had nobody to build me a coop so they roosted in the trees at night. I just turned 76 years young and still have the "bug".
Every city we lived in as a family, we had chickens in the backyard and never had a complaint. My children...
I do it if I can afford it. Where I live there is a great possibility that my chickens will get Fowl Pox. It's a terrible thing to deal with. I vaccinate if I can find the vaccine at a reasonable price but lately it has cost more to pay shipping that the actual vaccine. Anybody know how...

Hello and Welcome.
Are you wanting to start raising chickens for the eggs mostly or just for fun? I do it for fun and have always preferred bantams. Still get eggs but small ones.
I read this while researching weasels.
[Weasel kills are identified by severed heads and severe wounds to the back of the neck.}
And the chick that was eaten was attacked on the head and eaten partially down the neck. The other one was just killed. This may mean it had it's fill or something...
Yes, we have a pond a good ways from the house but I doubt an otter would go that far away from a pond that is full of delicious fish.
About the predator list: We've had bobcats, skunks, possum, snakes, hawks, eagles, you name it. Even had signs of a black bear. But very few can get into...
After doing a bit of research I believe it could have been a weasel after all. Waiting patiently on my trap to come.
Here are some photos of my chicken yard. It's very old now but I try to keep inspecting it, especially after what happened. You will see that 2 river birch trees that I...
The breach was not a tear. I have wire and then some more wire on that. Some of the newest wire was not tacked down good enough and it made a crack between the wires that I didn't know about. Unless there is another crack or hole somewhere that should be it. I will show you a photos when I...
Thanks, every body. This is very helpful. I'm not in the Piedmont, but we do have a pond but I kinda think this is not a weasel.
Possum sounds likely because we do see them sometimes. This one ate the head mostly and the other girl was dead but not eaten. Did you say that a raccoon doesn't...
I'm not new but I had to re-register because my email changed and I couldn't get into my account.
Anyway, I have a few Serama bantams and last night something got in and killed and partially ate my 2 sweet Serama girls. I only have 2 hens and 4 roosters left. This was terrible for me because...
I know this has been discussed before but the threads I read didn't answer my question.
My veterinarian provides me with Injectable Baytril 22.7 for my bird breeding and poultry breeding hobbies. I do not eat their eggs.
Now here's the question: I once had a chart showing how much baytril...
