How is your hen doing? We have a Bantam hen that was injured by our larger rooster. She has been separated, but looking to see if she will be ok? She seems in good spirits, just having trouble getting around. Very wobbly.
Our silkie Juliette started not feeling well 2 days ago. Yesterday while getting advise on FB I took her inside and was going to give her a bath. While inside she pooped twice a really nasty bloody poop. She had not done this in the coop I would have seen it. I was advised it was Coccidiosis and...
So I cracked some eggs today and you are 100% right! A bunch of them were fertile. So now I am going to collect the eggs laid today and sneak them under them to see what happens.
I can't believe I have not seen any of them mate. I have been obsessively watching the camera out there and nothing...
I don’t know, I’ve been watching them on the camera’s trying to catch them and haven’t seen it. The two silkie roosters just hangout together and the 1 Brahma Rooster just follows the Brahma hen. He just started crowing yesterday. The two silkies haven’t crowed yet.
I believe I have a broody Quail D’anver. She has been in the nesting box for 3 days. She only gets out once a day when I go in and give treats. Also, if one of the hens kick her out of the box to lay their egg then she moves to the next box.
How do I know if she’s broody or not feeling well? I...
For those of you who use sand in your coop how do you keep the dust down?
We recently purchased a 10x12 shed and transformed it into our chicken coop. With our last coop I used the deep litter method. This time after researching I used sand. All purpose arena sand from Lowe’s that says on the...
What a fun post, really enjoying all the funny stories.
Entry-
Napoleon, our Bantam Quail D’anver Hen has found her one and only favorite spot to lay... in our cat’s house and our cat Hudson was refusing to use said house (he preferred the old rickety stinky one) until he noticed Napoleon using...
super! That's what I was really hoping.
As for the 3 boys, currently they have all been raised together, are pretty docile and are getting along. If they start to act up then I will find them a loving home. I have already re-homed 2 roosters that we got with the original 3. I am really hoping...
Thanks,
This is very helpful. I do have multiple feed and watering stations and also spread scratch and snacks throughout the day.
The younger birds are confined to the coop and the older ones jump a gate and go in and out all day. I think I will not worry about the eggs for now. Getting them to...
Thanks Aart,
I believe you have answered a question or two of mine in the past as well. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge with me.
So do you think she is still laying? I do have fake eggs in the nesting boxes and she has laid in there in the past when I've locked her in.
I...
Should I be concerned? We have a bantam chicken that started laying (in our cats house) September 17th at 22 weeks. She was laying 1 egg a day, then all of a sudden about 2 weeks ago she stopped laying? We are in North Georgia. They have a 10x16 shed as a coop with lights on from 7am-7pm and she...
I know they are still young, and silkies are difficult to sex. Please give your educated opinion on if you think we have pullets or roosters. I have a suspicion that they are both roosters. :( I’m really hoping for least 1 hen.
The reddish one is quite feisty and has recently shown a red comb...
ok super, thanks for the positive feed back. We inherited this set up so was just hoping it would work for the flock. We want happy chickens. They do enjoy hanging out in the box below the 4 individual nesting boxes so maybe they will decide to lay there instead? Again time will tell. Thanks...
WOW!! Those are some fancy nesting boxes! I installed plywood on bottom backside of our coop yesterday. I’m considering buying a couple premade nesting boxes to mount to it. I haven’t seen the boxes you have though! I live your entire chicken setup, those are some lucky chickens. I feel like I...
Thanks Texas Wine Guy, we are also big loves of wine. That’s why we moved to N. GA they have some great vineyards up here!!
Thanks for giving me a different point of view in regards to the nesting boxes. I spoke to the daughter of the man that built it and she said his chick did lay eggs in...
Thanks AArt,
There is a lip in front of the box now that is 3.5 inches. I added a picture.
I have updated my location, we are in North East Georgia. I may need to add some more panels for the winter to keep them warm. It is a bit warm right now during the day and they have found their...
The roost is higher than the nesting boxes. There are also ceiling joists that the hens have been using as there roost. They have never slept in the nesting boxes. In fact today was the first time they checked them out and I’m thinking that may be because I put the false egg in there? I added a...
