    Prolapse?

Thanks for weighing-in. I gave her an epsom salt bath and 1/2 a Tums (hopefully the flavored ones are okay for hens?). I took another pic while I was washing her and will check in with my avian vet tomorrow. She's straining to pass whatever it is. I'm going to keep an eye on her and will put her...

    Prolapse?

I have an EE that has always had issues with laying soft shelled eggs. Last week she passed a weird, solid mass that I thought might be salpingitis but I took her to the avian vet and they said she was okay. She has since laid one normal egg. This morning she came out of the nest box with some...

    Emergency--BO vomited water, labored breathing

I have a 3 yo BO that is in crisis. I went to check on her at 4 pm and she was in the nest box which I thought was odd as it was late in the day and she hasn't started laying this year nor is she broody. My husband went out at 5 pm to put the girls away and told me that Noodle was acting weird...

My $5 chick just became a $500 chicken!!

Unfortunately, I never recovered my earring. I made a few attempts at collecting and then squishing through the poop to look for it (and believe me, that's every bit as fun as it sounds!) but it never turned up. At this point I think Noodle is destined to have have an especially fancy gizzard...

My $5 chick just became a $500 chicken!!

I have a 6 week buff orpington that enjoys sitting on my shoulder. She was just sitting with me out in the run and cocking her head admiring my earrings. "It's that cute", I thought, "Noodle likes bling just like I do". The next thing I knew, Noodle had pulled my diamond earring completely...

Lethargic chick - how frequently to force fluids?

I woke up this morning to find one of my 10-day old buff orpington's not doing well. She stayed under the brooder plate instead of coming out to greet me with the other chicks and then stood by herself. She is not drinking or eating on her own. I mixed some plain yogurt with molasses and we...

    Sand on top of pavers?

Thank you so much for the detailed response. I am sold on the benefits of sand! How many inches of sand do you typically put in your run and does the hardware cloth/chicken wire frame do a decent job of containing it so you don't have sand spilling out all over the place?

    Sand on top of pavers?

I live in Northern California where it only rains in the winters (if we're lucky!) and the summers are dry and hot. I am building a coop for my first flock, and from my research I would like to use sand in my run instead of wood shavings. I will be housing 3 hens in a 4 x 4 hen house with an...

    My new girls!

I picked up my first 3 chicks yesterday and I am having so much fun! I have two buff orpingtons and a light brahma. One of the BOs had pasty butt this morning which I'm hoping will be a one time thing. Other than that, everyone seems to be pretty happy and they are eating and drinking well!

OUR new coop is set up! From Roost and Root made in the USA!

Nice! I had been looking at their website and your coop is lovely. Is that the round top stand up coop? How many hens do you have?

    Feedback on coop design?

Due to a lack of carpentry skills I'm planning to have a coop built to house 3 hens. I had hoped to obtain a coop from Carolina Coops but they wouldn't be able to ship until October so I need a new plan. I'm sharing photos from a coop builder in my area and would love to know if any seasoned...

    Carolina Coops - California Coop

I am going to be getting 3 chicks soon and it will be my first time having hens, even thought it is something I have always wanted to do. I have complete analysis paralysis when it comes to the coop. I have. no construction skills, and while my husband is handy and could probably sort something...

    Wanna be Chicken Lady

After years of wanting to have chickens my husband is finally onboard with the idea and I am excited to get my first hens. I am planning to get 3 chicks that my neighbor is currently incubating. I have no idea what breeds to expect but she has been keeping chickens for decades and knows what...
