Free silkie rooster to good home, less than one year old - just started crowing and we can't keep him!
Needs to have a place he can roost that he can leap or climb to as he seems to have a broken wing.
If you can house him and can pick him up in Placerville/Shingle Springs area of California -...
This is my first post, sorry if I did it wrong!
One of our chicks from a friend last October just made it clear that he is a rooster. We are allowed to keep chickens here, but not roosters so this guy needs a good home.
He is about 6 months old and is a beautiful young Delaware rooster, mostly...
I like feeding the hens organic chicken food, but it is close to $25 per 50 pound bag at the local feed store.
I'm wondering if I could get a better price by having larger amounts delievered. I could probably split a 500 pound order with a friend down the street.
Do you know of any suppliers...
Thanks for all the suggestions, I've got blocks of ice in the run with the girls, and I just got a free fan for them!
Have you every heard of Freecycle.org? It has groups in most major areas and people offer free stuff they can't use anymore and post wanted ads for things they need. I posted...
We're suffering too, so I'm just trying to do for the chickens what the news is telling us to do for us, avoiding too much sun, making sure they have lots of cool, fresh water, and now I'm freezing their treats and some large jugs of water to put in their coop with a fan.
Can't clean the air...
Thanks guys, love those suggestions and I'll get right on it. I'll start by making room in the freezer....
I just have to share this. I had some frozen seaweed from our last trip to the beach and I took it out to the girls yesterday. They came running to meet me, but when that black frozen lump...
You could always check with a local 4H group and see if there are any kids that have experience with animals in your area that you could pay to check on your girls. That would probably take some time in advance to arrange.
It normally gets hot here in the summer, but today it is going to hit 108 degrees. I don't know how to keep the chickens cool, short of bringing them in the house! (Seriously, I'm thinking about it, there are only 6 of them). Right now I'm letting them free range under the bushes, its got to be...

Yes, my husband spent a whole day altering our rabbit hutch to turn it into a safe coop. He did a great job, it was just a standard redwood hutch and he shortened the legs, reinforced the stance by building a box around the base, built an L shaped perch for the girls to sleep on, and...
UPDATE/NEW PROBLEM:
Just in case you were curious, the raccoon didn't take any more chickens that night. Probably was full from the one he ate. Or leaving the radio on might have helped.
I see the error of throwing the dead chicken into the bushes (though it was done in a panic). The raccoon...

Thank you for this description - I'm going to work hard to keep my girls safe. Of course, after hearing of my night, my husband is starting to question it it is worth it to have them. I think so, of course!

It didn't have to get in... it grabbed her and ate her head through the chain link.
Good news is that we only lost the one. Maybe the radio worked. I also really appreciate the idea about only turning on the electric fence at night. That is something I can do. Maybe put it on a timer...
OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOh!
I just read a post about predators not coming near human voices!
I'm excited about this, I'm going to go find a radio and put it outside!

The only thing it ran from was the crazy lady in her pajamas driving a minivan right at it. I was wielding a plastic wiffle-ball bat. (Do raccoons laugh?)

Does that mean that this one will always check back here? Like, now we are on his mean route? Yuck. I hope I did the right thing by leaving the body out - wherever it landed. Maybe she/he will get full and go away until we can put up some more mesh or something.
It is 1:31am here in California and I woke up to one of my hens clucking loudly about 2 hours ago. A raccoon had just eaten the head of her friend and she wouldn't leave it's side. I could see the raccoon, and I threw everything I could at it, but it wouldn't leave.
Of course, I could see the...
Hi there!
I am also in the process of buying some chickens. I found the posting below on craigslist and he is selling me 8 Barred Rock hens for $10 each. My friend said that I'm paying too much, but they are close to 5 months old and I don't have the confidence to raise babies.
Anyway, I...
