    New Flock

I am planning on creating a new backyard flock in the next couple of weeks. (Unfortunately, all my chickens died when my well-meaning MIL let them out with my untrained dog) I only want pullets, but I would like different varieties. So my question is this: are there some varieties that don't do...

    Help! Older hens drawing blood!

Thank you, friends! I managed to separate the pullets from the fully grown hens. I put my pullets in a dog kennel in the run, so all of the chickens are in the same place but will be able to see but not touch. Hopefully they'll heal up quickly and we can try again.

    Help! Older hens drawing blood!

I added four three month old pullets to the henhouse. The hens had socialized with them lightly in the yard a couple of times and they seemed to mostly leave each other alone. I knew that the older girls would pick on them a bit, establishing a previous order and whatnot, but two of them are now...

    Featherless bum?

I purchased four Easter egger pullets from Tractor Supply about two weeks ago. One of them doesn't have any feathers on her little black bum. Should I be worried, or is this normal for this type of chicken? Is it maybe pasty butt?

    How to stop a broody?

Yep, one of my ladies went broody on me. The trouble is, I don't need any more chickens right now and I only have one nesting box. How to I get Broody Lady to stop being broody?

    Broody?

All of my ladies are about 13 months old. They have been laying regularly since August. I haven't checked to see how quickly she goes back to the nest after I move her, and I don't usually bother the girlies at night (I'm also a mom to twins, born in September, so I need my sleep, too!). She...

    Broody?

She has been at this for about a week now. It is easy to move her--she doesn't peck or scratch, but she is reluctant.

    Broody?

I have a pullet that sits on all the eggs (even the dummies!) constantly while in the coop. Could she be going broody? All my chickens are golden comets, which are generally not predisposed to broodiness.

    Hen has an eye problem

UPDATE: Our pullet is no longer a pirate. She has been back with the flock for a few weeks now, and she seems to be doing just fine.

    Hen and pullet beauty contest!

Why apologize? Based on the rules, that's cheating. Don't apologize for calling them out.

    Hen has an eye problem

UPDATE: After taking our pirate chicken to the vet, I learned that there is no ulcer and that it is, indeed, her third eyelid swollen shut. The vet gave her some steroids for inflammation and antibiotics just to be safe. He says that it should clear up in a day or two. I will keep you all...

    Hen has an eye problem

One of my golden comet pullets stayed out overnight (couldn't find her last night). Now that she turned up, my daughter noticed that one of her eyes is cloudy (see picture). Is this a treat at home situation, or should I be rushing to the vet?
