We had some trouble last year with mice around the house (inside & out). I ordered this stuff you sprinkle around the outside of your house - it contains dried urine from animals that eat mice/rats, etc. It seems to have worked. Will probably have to get more this year. Here's the web...

I'm with you - my first thought was a cat since you state you live in suburbia. A Maine coon cat could diffently climb a fence and kill a chicken - and any cat would/could carry it off. Hurry and fence off the top of your coop!!! Good luck! Cyndi
