Which brown egg laying hen lays the largest egg?

I know it's unusual but one of my Black Star hens laid a 4.3 oz. egg yesterday. She normally lays large eggs but never that big!

Is it harmful for hen to stay broody?

Thanks! I named her "Miss Prissy" and think I doomed her to being broody! It's so late in the season I am wondering about baby chicks. I'm not really set up for babies as I work full time out of the home and don't have an area in the coop to separate them from the big birds. However, I may...

Is it harmful for hen to stay broody?

I have 2 Black Star & 1 Leghorn that consistently lay eggs daily and 1 little banty hen that stays in the henhouse, sitting on their eggs, daily. I know she comes out and eats and drinks but my question is this: Will it harm her to stay broody? I have tried a couple of times to push her out...

    Black Stars not laying

I have 2 Black Star chicks that are about 22 or 23 weeks old. I saw our rooster on one of them last week - she is the one with the most developed comb & waddle. How much longer until she lays? Thanks!

HELP!!! What just killed my daughters pet chickens???

Could also have been an owl. Some are very large and perfectly capable of taking a chicken in a flash. I heard about 1 snatching up a yorkie! Sorry about your little girl's chickies....

    Another dead chicken

They are in a confined area - not free range - and all in the shade except early morning a little sun comes in. They've had fresh water and we have been running a fan on them all day long. Now that I have had time to think, she didn't eat as many greens out of my hands yesterday as she usually...

    Another dead chicken

We lost a banty about a month ago...... no real visible signs of being sick - since we didn't know how old she was when we got her and it had been real hot we just assumed she was old and weak and died in the heat. Well, it's been hot here the past 2 days (90 degrees plus) and we came home to...

    Beak/nostrils bleeding

Thanks for the reply. Sometimes I feel like I'm the only one out here. I checked Lola this morning. I don't think her beak is cracked. She hasn't got her full comb in yet and where it grows down to her nostrils on her beak is where she hit it. I see a little dried blood but no swelling or...

    Beak/nostrils bleeding

Well, guess I should know not to let my yorkie get near the coop. She scared the girls and it looks like Lola (white leghorn) banged her beak and it's bleeding. I can't tell if her beak cracked or not - she is not having any trouble eating/drinking with it. I can't tell if it stopped bleeding...

    Rats Rats And More Rats

We had some trouble last year with mice around the house (inside & out). I ordered this stuff you sprinkle around the outside of your house - it contains dried urine from animals that eat mice/rats, etc. It seems to have worked. Will probably have to get more this year. Here's the web...

    1 chicken keeps pecking me

I have a white leghorn pullet who will eat greens and corn out of my hand and will peck at my hands even when they are empty. She actually hopped onto my shoulder Sunday! If you hand feed anything to your chicks I think you risk getting pecked every once in a while. Don't judge her too...

    17 year cicadas

There is a great website I found while researching them: www.cicadamania.com It shows a map where the main events will be - by county in the states. I sure hope they don't stink!!!!!

    17 year cicadas

We are due for a "17 year cicada" event this spring. I am wondering.......... if we have enormous amounts of dead cicadas (they die after laying their eggs) - do you think we could bag 'em up and freeze them for future chicken protein? If there are as many as predicted we might be able to...

    Opinion - Fox or Raccoon?

I'm with you - my first thought was a cat since you state you live in suburbia. A Maine coon cat could diffently climb a fence and kill a chicken - and any cat would/could carry it off. Hurry and fence off the top of your coop!!! Good luck! Cyndi
