Hello Mustang
Well I'm also in Alaska and can tell you shipping eggs up here is normally a disaster. If you order and dozen and get four to hatch, you're doing great. Seller packages the eggs and expects the box to be treated well. PO get the box and they stack other boxes on and around it...
I've also got a Sportsman and I have excellent hatches running in the low 60's at hatch. You might be in the desert where it's dry but always spot check your sportsman with another unit to test humidity.
Well, I'm in Alaska and in February it can easily be -30, so I don't open the door before starting. I have both a gas car and a diesel truck and run brooders in the garage. I start the car, hit the button. With an 8x10 door, it changes the air in the garage pretty fast. Just be aware that...
Exactly what we have in all out hen houses. Poop tray is the wording we use, it deletes the ammonia smell and clumps up the poop. We've found 1/4 screen cleans out the big parts but we then use a smaller screen to filter out the smaller pieces. We add a bag every couple months as needed.
Now in my 3 houses, we have no choice but to add light. I'm in Alaska, light comes up at 10am and sets around 4, if I went naturally I wouldn't get eggs from October to May. We've set timers to turn on at 7am, off at 10, on at 4, off at 11. Now there are also red bulbs in the side walls so even...
I have a hen that was grabbed by an Eagle on the right side but she was then dropped. Had a pretty good wound on the right and the right wing drooped. Took care of the wound and it healed up, the wing continued to droop. This week I found the wing on the floor of the coop, wing joint looked...
The Golden Comet isn't a breed, it's a cross. If memory serves, it's a white Rock roo over a New Hampshire Red. You can produce the sex links on the first generation, pullets are golden, roos are white. This will not run true for future generations though. I've had New Hampshires, was never...
I heard about it from folks down south so I bought a pallet and shipped it up. Then one day I was walking through Wal Mart Wasilla and presto there it was, $8 a bag cheaper then what I paid for it with shipping. I don't know if the Soldotna Wal mart would carry it or not but might be worth a...
Since you mentioned the poop tray, you need to look into a product called sweet PDZ. It's granular like sand and it dries out the poop and kills off the ammonia smell. We use it in all three houses, works great. Once a week we screen it out to remove the poo, then it's back fresh again. You can...
I sure hope they are good layers because I bought 50 of them this year. None of mine are growing to look like a BR though, mine are black with some having a gold pattern around the lower neck.
Meyer hatchery has all 3 you're looking for but the BCM's are pretty pricey. Go for late march, early march is still to cold and you may have increased mortality.
Well Redhead, I am in Alaska and agree, don't heat the coop. Now I won't say I don't have the ability to add heat when we get those -40 weeks and the wind picks up (rarely gets that cold) I do have the ability to turn on some heat if I see that they pile to stay warm. They generate enough heat...
Now I can tell you from my location that the chickens do fine here in the winter. We just opened the new house, 18x24. From previous issues with humidity in the old house, this time we installed two 12" fans high up on the opposing walls and at the end of the coop a 12" vent. Fans are controlled...
I'm so far from ready. Just got the roof on the new coop (16x24). Now need to paint the walls, install the flooring, build the nest boxes, install the roosts. Hope to be done by Oct 1 and move the birds then, right now I have a little over 300 in the field. We'll move the breeders into the big...
I've been feeding my 300+ chickens whole grain breads for quite some time as treats and they have never slowed down. Now it's not the main food, just a treat. They like the grain breads, 12 and 21 are the favorites. Yes, I get my bread for free, so it's hard to pass that up for the birds. They...
