I just finished reducing my flock from about 40 to 21. Woot!
My current number/breeds are as follows: (ahem)
(Roosters)
1 BCM
1 (mystery) bantam I named Little Mister
(Hens)
2 Ameraucanas
2 Barred Rocks
2 Phoenix
2 Olive Eggers
1 Barnyard mix
1 Tolbunt Polish
1 Silver Laced Polish
1 Buff...
4/5 under a broody hatched. The other two gave up, and one of the turkeys died yesterday, no clue what happened. A girl wanted to buy a couple dozen eggs for the incubator but never picked them up, so I have 36 eggs incubating. I think I'm in trouble.
I understand with limits. ;) thankfully I have none. :D I told myself three phoenix, since all I wanted was a pretty roo. Sadly, my rooster died within days of arriving. I only have two hens, but I still adore them.
The bans I've been reading about though... I hope they get a good hook on that...
Have you ever considered Phoenix? I have two, and they are the best. They can fly, but mine aren't really flighty. My kids can catch them easily (and I have a 2 year old).
An EE is anything mixed with a blue egg layer that carries the blue egg laying gene. Technically, and OE is an EE, but a subcategory for those that lay ONLY green eggs. To get an OE, one could cross anything with the blue egg layer with a brown egg layer to get a green egg layer. There's an...
It's technically an Olive Egger, but my favorite OE lays a pretty dark green I have some second generation OEs that should start laying the next couple of months. I'm excited to see what they will produce.
Thank you. :)
I had Welsummers, but I sold them all. They have good temperaments, but the hatchery stock didn't lay the shade of brown I was looking for. If you just want their temperament, they are a good bird. If you want the egg color, find a breeder if you can.
All of my EEs from the hatcheries lay green/blue(ish) eggs. Not quite a blue, yet not a nice olive from regular OEs.
The green one on the top came from one of my hatchery EE roo over a brown egg laying hen.
The middle one is a hatchery EE roo over another hatchery EE hen, and the farthest on...
I have a Salmon Faverolle, and with my current large flock, she doesn't get bullied. EEs (Americaunas) are really good, though the Wyandottes I have had in the past are notorious bullies. Maybe if your Wyandotte is younger you won't have any problems, but I wouldn't recommend them for being...
I hate when that happens... I had three (two of them were favorites, a beautiful EE, white with brown breast and grey head.. So pretty, and a sweet Barred Rock) lost to neighbor dogs... One of the dogs were stolen from the owner (thank goodness for me). They left it outside on a chain anyway...
I have a small rainbow , but much like trying to name off all 7 of Snow White's dwarves within 15 seconds, it can be difficult to remember them all. *ahem*
Adult Flock:
1 Barred Rock
2 Phoenix
1 OE
3 EEs
1 Red Sex-Link
1 Salmon Faverolle
2 Silkies
2 New Hampshire Reds
Total: 13...
