First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

Done. Thanks. I haven't explored the forum much, glad to know there's an emergencies board.

HELP! A friend asked if we'd take her 6 RIR that came from the same source we got our chicks. Same age, same shipping batch, same feed, different treats, she vaccinated against coccodia I did not. She has other chicks as well, just realized she'd taken on too much. My 15 chicks have been in...

First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

Whoop whoop! The neighbor came over to help and I see 4 walls and a roof on the coop. I'm crossing my fingers I get to kick the ladies out of my bathroom today. I'll miss the cheeps, but not the smell (and definitely not the toddler tantrums associated with the brooder). Other than having the...

First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

I have a feeling it was stress induced or from a change in feed while they were with a friend over the weekend. Also, poop indicates the ladies have been roosting on the top edge of the tub... I finally found a good use for the spare window screen we've had laying around.

I've never been so glad to be pooped on. One of my ladies had a clogged vent that got noticed today. I'm crossing my fingers she is in the clear now that things are moving (slowly), but there appears to be a lot of backup. Does anyone have any idea when the risk of pasty butt is passed?

One of the short ends is a wood wall with window that needs to be torn out and fixed anyway. The grand idea would be to make an addition to the connex, so 4' of the coop would be in the connex and 4+ feet would be outside the connex. Yeesh, the more I think about this, the less I want to do it...

First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

Absolutely! I'm kind of amazed that my day of googling about brooders only taught me about heat lamps. I'm really glad I pulled lamps and bulbs from the indoor garden rather than buying. I have a coop question. An opportunity is presenting it's self to put the coop in one side of a...

Good to know. I'll keep throwing bits in! Also, I think it was you who recommended the heating pad cave as opposed to the heat lamp... THANK YOU! Much happier chicks, and MUCH happier mama! The chicks were afraid of the dark the first night and chirped for quite a while before settling down...

I believe so. I haven't fed any to them, jut getting to mealie farm started. I did throw in a chunk of sod yesterday, thinking the fresh greens and attached grit would do them good... It was demolished.

Ha, that's fantastic! I once ordered a PBR at a bar in a fishing town. As soon as the R came out of my mouth a salty old guy at the bar turned around here and said, "around here, missy, it's called PB-ARRRRRrrrrrr." I now need an arsenal of chicken pirate jokes. Also, hooray for small houses...

First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

Today is day 5 with chicks in my life, and thus far I've learned: -Heat lamps are scary! Heating pad cave is definitely the way to go. -Chicks eat a lot. Mine are using just over a quart of scratch and feed a day, 15 (was 16) chicks. -I thought I was mentally prepped to handle it when dead...

First Time Chick Parents, Spring 2016

I became a new Chick mom yesterday. 8 RIR, 8 Easter Eggers. All seem to be doing well despite me breaking the red bulb today (outside of the brooder, caught fire to news papers, it was eventful). Hubs is taking on a meal worm farm and got that set up today. I started some barley fodder...
