Chickens for 10-20 years or more? Pull up a rockin' chair and lay some wisdom on us!

Just to be rude and just jump in here, but please check your law as a pellet gun is also a firearm and would be just as illegal to discharge. Careful with solutions.

An oldtimer recommended winter rye for the chickens, I am going with that and winter wheat as well. It will be good for other wildlife as well. I am going to hang a large tarp and spread hay under it just to encourage going outside...it needs mulch there anyway.

Coop space. Beekissed mentioned earlier (I can't find it) about having deferent levels of being in the coop. I don't see alot of that in process, but it makes a big difference with a flock of various ages. Think about putting shelves in, it adds another dimension especially for the smaller...

Wouldn't it be interesting, if this life turned out merely a platform from which, you can show God exactly how you'd like to be treated by how you treat the sick, the injured, the stupid, you come in contact with? At what point is an animal suffering too much and needs put down, at what point is...

The mama rabbit will search for the rabbit even if the nest is moved. Put it back near where you found it. Check it in the morning to see if its belly is full round and warm. Use kitten milk or goat milk no cow milk...feed it once a day--at night. Mark the nest so you know if mama uncovered...

I've never seen a worm in my chickens poop. I have seen them goble up every cig but tosed on the ground at the shop. Turns out, nicotene ingested is a potent antiparasitic...go figure. Guess they still know what they are doing...either way.

Actually, I think wasps eat spiders, I know they pack them in with their larvae...maybe that's why the sting is so **** potent. I got hit by one last week, the hand, forearm swelled, even into my elbow..one sting. So be careful. Give me a good old honeybee anytime.

Lw I will share my next dream project this fall (after I got an auto door) rain water barrels to collect water right at the coop because I do not want to be lugging it this winter. Right now I have buckets that collect the drip from a/c units, put a facet on the bucket and can take off that to...

Right. This year I am fencing the garden plots so once seedings are rooted the chckens can go though and methodically eat pests, once the veggies and fruits form, close it off. After the harvest they can root around again and spread manure for me. A flock of tiny rototillers that save me time...

Anybody think about all the bugs they eat? I haven't seen a bug or spider on the poarch or under the house in a long time. I have to start looking and digging for them now, so add the cost of spraying insecticides around the foundation and cost savings go up. Now is I could only teach them to...

Everyone has their fav birds, and you know what you want so, consider as well the climate and conditions you live in, what do people tend to keep in your area that do well. If you want a docile bird that will stay close to home and out of the neighbors yard, or something that can fly into the...

IMO game fowl are the prettiest with the most variety in feather pattern, lay well though small eggs, friendly and smart, but they won't attack you or the kids, they will not tolerate being chased and hugged. They are very low maintainence birds. Depends on where and what you get, they can be...

Ranging certainly makes a difference, breed of chicken too, individuals within that breed. I just got a new game hen. She is full on game with five chicks. I will not be putting her in the broody pen with 2 broodies and 25 new chicks, her kids are already real hunters...so in another day...
