The way your coop is set up though, they might always want to face the window, back to the wall. This means, that if it -is- a problem, you might be able to move the roost forward, and have everything work perfectly. Sure is a beautiful coop!

In my small coops/ moveable coops, I just put PDZ on the entire floor.

Yep, a 2x4 is way too small. 8 inches would be the minimum. I think 18 inches deep would be perfect. But, make it a removable board so cleaning is easy.

Yep......I have a deep door sill into my coop, maybe 10 inches deep. Deeper would be better.

I just fluff up the shavings and add more as needed. Fluffing them helps to hide a great deal of the poop. But I probably only shovel it all out twice a year.

I have sand in my dirt floor coop, and love it. I tried it out in my wood floor coop and did like it, it stayed clean for a pretty long time, but I prefer the wood chips/shavings in the coop.

Thanks for trying it out with the ducks, I was wondering how it would work with them!

Ah, I get shavings for free if I bag myself, or for very low cost if they bag it for me, at the local saw mills and a timber frame place.

I really wanted to try it....but I couldn't figure out how to set it up for my ducks. I did try sand, and that was HORRID, it froze into a poopy block of nasty. I am a little worried that PDZ would do the same. When .i let the PDZ go too long in the chicken poop trays over the winter, it also...

And if you get below freezing, set up the perches so that they perch on the four inch wide side. :D

Depends.... Full sized large fowl, or bantam? I think at a guess.... The shortest would be 14inches above the perch, 16 inches maybe safer, for large sized fowl. If you really want to get as much space out of the coop as possible, try to install the poop tray and perch so that you can shift...

My bones are aching for some heat. 0 F is just fine for chickens. With desert dryness, that will help reduce your frostbite risk, which is great. You already used the perfect sized perches to make sure that they do not loose their toes.

Dave, that looks wonderful! You have done a great job, and using left over lumber is a big plus! If you live someplace really hot, I might be tempted to cut a long vent in the higher wall, up along the top. Like three inches tall by the length of the wall. You could keep the strip you cut...

I have three poop boards with the granulated and one with the powder. I found the powder was really needed for turkey poop, :sick Granulated maybe lasts longer, since it doesn't completely coat every poop like the powder. I prefer the powder for tossing in the nest box to keep it fresh. I...

Some people use PDZ straight, some mix it with sand. I guess you have to try it and see which works best for you.

I would keep it the way it is, and add the new chicks to the existing flock as is. But, then I have never had a big disease outbreak.

Yep, some kitty litter has perfumes and chemicals that are not good to eat. Depends on the litter... Lots of kinds out there. Remember, the chickens will eat it.

The answers to all of your questions will depend on who you ask. Everyone sets up their coop differently, and also different breeds and ages of birds need different set-ups. In my chicken tractor, the entire floor is a poop tray and covered in PDZ. In my coop and shed I have four different...
