Hi Everybody, and Welcome new peeps!!! Been busy here but the chicks are doing well. We still have 8 after losing the one to accident. They're really starting to feather out and should be ready to start integration out to the coop in about a week or so.
Thanks everyone, it's amazing how fast you get attached to the lityle fluff balls. Fortunately it was accidental and not disease so I feel confident for the others.
Sadly we lost a chick today, our little RIR didn't make it. They really do try and find new ways to kill themselves daily. I'll give her a proper burial once the storm clears out.
We have tons of sand which the adults dust bathe in regularly but I was going to put a dedicated tub in their run for them for days they can't be free ranged. We just re-seeded the lawn after extensive landscaping so they're stuck in the run for at least two weeks. It's quite large but they're...
Question about the DE? I was going to mix some with wood ash for their dust bath but if it will cause more harm than good what would you suggest for a feed tub dustbath? Wood ash and sand?
Let me check the back of the bag I just bought and see if they give a feed average. We free feed plus they'll go outside shortly so I couldn't say fro ours.
We got them from Meyers, they all arrived healthy and perky. The heating pad appears to be working well, it sits on bricks so it holds the heat in for them. We used license plates (x military have moved to multiple states) to stiffen the roof so they can climb up and it won't cave in. They're...
We'll have 15 total if all the incoming chicks survive which is as full as I want to make this coop. Next piggy bank goal is a bigger coop, but that's going to have to wait a bit..
Correction the hardest part is sitting here waiting for the post office to update the tracking info, according to their site my chicks haven't left OH yet and I know that to be a lie.
Brooding chicks is honestly pretty easy if you have the temp right for them. Check out the MHP thread and it'll give you tons of good info, plus it's still very active so they'll answer any questions you might have. We did it for the first time last June (with a heat lamp) and I was so worried...
I'm super excited, although a bit of our order got changed due to availability issues. Now we're getting 2 EE, an Americauna, BO, RIR, Lav Orp, BR, Austra White, and a Blue Splash Maran. So still a pretty variety but not what I had originally hoped to get.
I like them all except I'm a...
Chicks next week!!! Chicks next week!!! My order will show up either Wed or Thursday of next week. Sadly I had to switch out two because the hatchery didn't have the number of eggs expected but that just means we're getting a second EE and a Blue Splash Maran. I may switch the EE to a...
