When I built my new coop I wanted it to be tall enough so I could easily walk in. You should also check out the winter waterer threads. Lots of good ideas there. :D I have food and water under my poop boards and it works fine. My roosts are only 4-6 inches above the poop boards but I can easily...

I have Bantams so my roost is only 4-6 inches above the poop trays. I do have a roost bar that is a 2x3 that slips into a metal bracket. I got the metal bracket in the joist hanger department at Lowes.

Just 1 inch works for me. In my old coop I have a 1 x 5 inch board cut in half so that it really is a 3/4 x 2 inch piece that runs the length of my poop tray. I usually have 3/4 to 1 inch of PDZ mixed with DE in that tray. In my new coop I have used a 2 x 3 as the edge to 5/8 inch plywood and I...

Mine goes directly into the compost bin. DH turns it every so often. We put every thing vegetative in there (no meat or fat) 1 year later (we ignore it for a year) we get great soil. I also put my goose poop in. I rake the goose pen daily. I have no smell in my pens.:D

The top picture shows the left side depooped and the right side ready to depoop. I probably only have 1/2 inch of my 1/3 PDZ, 1/3 DE and 1/3 sand mix on the board. I have hardly lost any depth since I started using it. The second picture (sorry it s blurred) is after I picked up the poopy mix...

Reply to Missa Chickabee... You don't need to have it really deep just enough to scoop. If you have an epically wet spot just put a bit of the mix on it and it will dry up. I will add a picture of my sifter you can see in the picture that I don't have it too deep. You could easily get by with a...

If you sift the poop on the board only a small bit of whats on the poop sticks. I use 1/3 DE, 1/3 DMZ, 1/3 sand and haven't added any for months. You don't loose much (I use the granulated DMZ) It just coats the poop with a fine coating that sucks the moisture and ammonia out of it and leaves it...

Reply to "andycowboy" - you might want to reconsider the pine shavings on the poop board and substitute sand as a filler to stretch the amount of DE and PDZ that you need. The reason is that you can't sift the pine shavings. Otherwise you can sift out the poop and you don't loose much of the...

After reading about poop boards on this thread, I retrofitted my 25 year old coop and installed poopboards and a new roost. I am now a convert. It takes me only 10 minutes every other day to clean up after my 13 bantams. Above is my coop with the new roost and poopboards and below is my coop...
