Getting the flock out of here - a diary of a crazy chicken man

Too bad about the chicks, Oz! Up in the VA mountains our weather has been cooler than normal this summer and the chickens have been laying great, though some are starting to molt now. It's been in the 70's-low 80's during the day and in the 50's at night! Having lived in TX for so many years...

Just jumping in to Congratulate you on the adoption finalization, Oz! I haven't been around much - crazy busy moving to a new micro-farm (2.7 acres). I don't have a Bernie, so I'm finishing the newest coop mostly by myself. But - I'm so excited for you and Mrs. Oz!!!

To my knowledge, Irfanview does not have the option for layers. There is another freeware program called GIMP that does have this option. It's more in depth and takes a little longer to learn, but it's a good program!

Beautiful photos, Sally! I use IrfanView to modify my photos. You can download it for free. You open a photo, highlight the place you want to put text, hit Edit > Insert Text, (pick your font, size and color, and voila! I usually just put a small watermark in a bottom corner, but you can make...

Glad to hear the quail seem to be on the mend. What a blessing it is to have Bernie so on top of things that he notices the first signs of things being amiss. And yay, goats! LOL!

Hang in there, Oz. The heritage breeds can take a LOT longer to start laying, but the payoff is that they can lay for years more than the production / non-heritage breeds. They'll be worth it in the long run. Do you already count Production Reds or Leghorns amongst your chicken ranks? If not...

One thing to remember is that meat chickens are usually processed at around 8-12 weeks of age. Most of the chicks in the farms are basically still in the "brooder" stage. They aren't fully feathered and can't handle the cold... The difference is that instead of keeping young chicks in a brooder...

You are a WONDERFUL mamma!! Deb - likewise for you. You are a great mamma and a good person. You need to start capitalizing your name, girl! I have severe dyscalculia. Can't do numbers in my head, can't help my 5th grader with her math (which is extremely embarrassing!!) and I can't spell at...

Your dad looks SO happy in these pictures! HUGS! Rolito - I thought the "bumble bee" color was a VERY GOOD idea! I put the little laughing smiley in because I very much enjoyed the idea! I Would love to find a bird with black and yellow stripes. It would be quite beautiful. Beetle color is nice...

One thing I think people often forget to factor in whilst making prepper-style plans is water for cooking. Yes - you need drinking water, but you must also have clean, potable water for cooking all the rice, beans and whatnot you have stored away. Those food items require a pretty good amount of...

We would like to become more self sufficient and less dependent on the electric company and grocery store. And if you do go the prepping rout, think of the things that will have the most value if something major, like an asteroid strike, caused world-wide havoc. The things with the most value...
