IMHO, that is not a Penedesenca variety. It doesn't even have a Penedesenca comb. I wouldn't give him any more money if you want true Penedesencas. Ask to see the eggs that his birds are producing. The eggs should be intense reddish maroon and the combs should be carnation type.

There is no such thing as a silver duck wing Penedesenca unless that is something he created - in which case they would be extremely rare but unrecognized. The varieties of Penedesenca that exist anywhere in the world are Black, Crele, Wheaten and Partridge. There are many varieties of...

I heard there were a bad run of batteries in them. I highly recommend a new battery. This is my favorite thermometer. Extremely accurate and fast at a fair price. http://www.thermoworks.com/RT301WA

I haven't seen something labeled 'broiler feed' but I assume it is the same or similar as a couple brands of 'Meat Maker'. That is a 22% protein feed for growing chicks fast - basically for cornishX. I've been using that for the first couple weeks of chicks growth and then I drop to an 18%...

A protracted hatch and chicks failing at different days could be from so many things. Do you rotate the eggs around the incubator throughout? There are always warm and cool spots in those incubators. If one is sitting in a cool area, it could hatch a couple days later than one in the hot zone...

Oh well. I agree about roosters ( and all non-layers) and the kidney issue. I usually mention that but in this case, Karen's issue is with hatchability so I thought I'd mention calcium's effect on sperm. I'll see if I can find them but I read 2 research papers regarding this. One noted that...

They look very nice. Do you know any farmers that raise the Classic Black? (i.e. very dark eggs and white earlobes) I hope you get a few more. Regular layer feed is adequate for layers' body maintenance and egg production, however, I truly believe it is inadequate for breeders and good...

What are your breeding pair eating? Is the chick vigorous?

That's great. I have 2 cockerels that hatched January 2. 10 other chicks that hatched about 3 weeks ago and all have been out in the coop for well over a week during that cold snap with a small Premier heat plate brooder for them. The chicks rarely use the heat plate and have chosen to sleep...

The Improved are impressive for a meat bird. I'm still old fashioned and love the Classic. I'm working on maintaining the European standard for the classic black. It is hard to beat that white earlobe and dark egg. IMHO, the dark egg is what draws people here to the breed. Most Americans aren't...

I don't think so. There was a gal in Ohio with some nice hens but she kept losing her roosters. I tried several times to get her one but it fell through. Haven't heard from her in years. Depending on the variety, Carolinas, GA, FL, CA, AZ and MO are about the only places I can think of. I only...

I feel your pain. I looked for my first birds for years. I have Black Pene hatching eggs available. I have the following tentative shipping dates for chicks in 2017. February 27 March 7 April 3 April 11 May 1.

By his own admission he selects for egg color but not white earlobes or carnation combs. I had considered buying some but a friend got blacks from him that had 5 toes.

Thank you very much for that information. I had read over the last couple years that in moving to a larger bird for meat, the 'improved' had lost egg color, earlobe color and comb issues. IMHO, that's a shame. No wonder the birds for meat are so pricey. They were pricey at the fair when they...

Hi Dallen. I had learned through e-mail that he passed. That is a real loss. I didn't know he was so young. Were you able to make any contacts with breeders of Classic Blacks? I'm curious if the classic has largely been abandoned for the improved. Did you see any dark eggs?

I have bought many breeds from Sandhill and overall I was satisfied. Glenn, by his own admission does not select Blacks for white earlobes or carnation comb. He selects primarily for the dark egg. I have a friend that bought Blacks from him and split the order with a friend. Some of the birds...

I'll e-mail you but I have nothing available till after the first of the year. In Spain, the meat is considered organileptically unique for its flavor. They do run about a pound heavier than the other varieties but the carcass is still long and thin by US meat standards. Americans look at...

How did it go Karen? I'm redoing my incubators but should start hatching again by December or January. If you want, I'll incubate some of your eggs for you after the first of the year. It's amazing how few of these wonderful birds are out there. I think there are 2 possible reasons. Lots of...

Agreed! As Mediterranean birds, they handle the heat but the desert may be a challenge. I call them aloof. They avoid human contact so I wouldn't call them friendly till about a year or so of age when they realize you won't eat them and you feed them. I sold some eggs to a guy in Arizona...

Mine? I'm running a LG right now. My big cabinet is still being refurbished. I just haven't had time. I have 9 chicks that have hatched in the last week or so. 5 more due next week.
