Jamie, I'm wondering what the fur was like on that black one? It looks longer and nicely silvered. In fact, from the picture it looks like a silver fox. Which, would be incredible if you could produce that from a nice champ doe and NZ. You said red nz buck x champ doe right?

Glad it's working out so well. I wonder if they have that "hybrid vigor" you hear so much about. Though, I find most breeds of rabbits to be genetically sound (excluding peanuts in dwarf breeds and max factor in Netherland dwarfs). Also, Jamie help me train my pup to stop jumping!

Jaime, Be careful with a high powered pellet gun. I've put down several hundred rabbits. The pellet gun sometimes doesn't do the trick. The way I prefer is with a hammer (I know sounds barbaric). I just hold the rabbit from the top of the hits with one hand while he's dangling I rap him on the...

Yeah she's got that nice commercial type. Well filled out and solid looking.

My Rabbit Journey~New Pics pg 17

Well she very well could be 1/4 flemish. that would explain the rangy and lack of commercial type. Flemish are like the buff brahmas of the rabbit world. They take FOREVER to reach max weight, they have massive bone. And if you want a meat rabbit you're better off looking elsewhere. They also...

Yep, she's just lacking that "commercial type" overall. She's really narrow in the midsection (behind the shoulders/ribs area) and she doesn't have a nice loin or topline. She looks really rangy as opposed to a solid commercial type. The thing that you did and not sure if you meant to was how...

Just sounds like she is pre-disposed to having poor condition. Some rabbits just don't hold weight. I would suggest culling her. you won't want her offspring, that's for sure. Free choice hay (NOT ALFALFA, though I suppose since you're going to slaughter the high calcium doesn't matter) should...

I'd give her some time to flesh out. If she stays "rough" cull her. What part of the country you in? I can find you some solid meaties to get you going.

Quote: I would say given you haven't developed your line at all I would bank on 3 pounds to start. edit again: I just called a buddy of mine who's been raising meat rabbits for the last 25 years. He said 80-85% is more reliable.

My Rabbit Journey~New Pics pg 17

Nope that isn't a typo - a good quality fryer rabbit (5 pounds live weight) should dress out at 80-90% live weight. This is including the edible heart, kidneys, and liver. The percentage does go down as you grow the rabbit. I good roaster (7-9 pound live weight) you'll get about 60-65% of live...

As far as meat rabbits go, most NZ are still prized for their commercial abilities. The cals have really started turning into a "fancy" show breed. As does anything with a color/pattern. NZ by eight weeks usually hit 5 pounds and considering that they are 90% weight when dressed out is quite a...

My Rabbit Journey~New Pics pg 17

Larkrise the rule of thumb for show rabbits is: 1 oz of pellets per pound of body weight - 1 cup tends to be about 8oz. Your NZ look about half grown and about 4.5 - 5 pounds so a half cup is about right. You also want to give them alllllllll the hay they want at all times. It will prevent...

They will more than likely gnaw on the mats. Honestly, I'm so in love with the tile idea you should just go to Home Depot or Lowes and pick up a cheapy 12x12 sample tile!

The plastic mats are at TSC - or you can order from one of the companies I listed links to in the previous pages. Palpating takes practice. Certainly sounds like your does are bred the way they ran around grunting!
