Since I appear to be awake first, I’ll reply first. Congratulations on getting them in the new coop at night and especially on getting them to lay in the nesting box. It took me 2 years to get mine to lay inside the coop! Since yours were just hatched in June, they may not even have an interest...

Gertrude abandoned her nest and 23 eggs a few days ago. We think she finally got so aggravated at other hens sitting on her and laying chicken eggs, that it wasn’t worth it to her anymore. That’s just the best reason we could figure out anyway. We aren’t too disappointed, but my sister in law...

I was sitting on the back porch this morning before church, when all 11 guineas starting screaming and running towards the front yard. I’m used to the screaming, but they usually do it just standing around. It caught my attention so I looked up to see them running towards a fox in the front...

I’m not sure how long they will lay here. I know Gertrude was sitting on clutches in September the last 2 years. In 2016 I took the eggs from her (hidden nest in the woods), and last year the entire hatch failed, I assume due to extreme heat and humidity from the flood. As far as I know she...

I’m not sure if this is a “hooray” moment or an “oh dang it” moment. The keets will be exactly 2 months old tomorrow. They all stick close to the parents, so I’m guessing they will create a flock of 11.(?) However, yesterday we found a guinea egg in the run! We picked it up and placed it in the...

At last count we were “down” to 62 total birds. My wife’s nephew, down the road, lost his whole flock of 11 in one day. After he built a better coop, we gave him 6 pulletts we had hatched out this spring. He got an egg their first day there! We also gave an obnoxious rooster to a friend of our...

@GlennLee I’m sure after so much time at the shelter, she is just happy to finally be in a loving family and she will continue to do her best so show her appreciation. You said she’s already corrected some of her wild behaviors, she’ll catch on eventually. I was initially worried the keets...

I still haven’t found the courage to eat a meal worm. I assume it must be a combination of deep dish pizza and chili cheese dogs. The keets are now 7 weeks old and have started developing their helmets. They have little bumps on top of their heads to go along with little wattles.

The keets are coming up on 7 weeks old in a couple more days. From a distance, it’s hard to tell them from the parents. My god they grow fast! I think they are starting to call instead of just cheeping. While they were begging for worms on the back porch this morning, I thought I could determine...

Gary and all 9 keets were playing in the back porch nesting boxes yesterday. While playing with the keets late yesterday, I noticed they are starting to develop their waddles. They all have little nubs on their lower cheeks.

We’ve only seen 1 this year, in the coop, and it was only about 4’ long. Gertrude alerted me to it when she and the keets were still locked in the first week. I got it before it did any damage. How are things going with the new puppy?

Surprisingly my 78 year old father in law is more excited about all the new additions than the grandkids. He rides his golf cart down here almost everyday just to see the keets. He has hinted several times they he would like to have chickens at his house, but I would end up having to build the...

Our original 14 keets from 5 weeks ago are now down to just 9. We believe it was hawks but I haven’t seen the attacks so I’m not positive. We’ve also had a fox take some bigger hens in the past few months. On the bright side, the last broody hen hatched out her last egg yesterday. I just...

As most of you know, this is our first set of keets after trying for 2 years. It is amazing how much faster they mature than chickens. At just over 2 weeks old they would leave their parents behind and run to me if I walked out in the yard. Now at 3 weeks they are perfectly happy to perch up on...

Father and son (?) overlooking their kingdom. At only 2 weeks old the keets learned the mealworms are stored on the back porch. They come up first then Gertrude follows them to see what’s up. The big chickens already accept/fear the keets.

Probably the only photo I will ever be able to get clearly showing all 14 keets with Gertrude. Dang they are quick! I let them out to free range this afternoon for the first time. Gary did a great job of bringing up the rear to herd any stragglers along. She took them all back in by 6:30...

It’s good to see @GlennLee back. So sorry about your beloved dog. We lost one of our Bassetts a couple months ago. But it was another opportunity to explain the cycle of life to the grandkids, baby chicks hatched out the same week. I figure by week 2 the keets are going to be free ranging with...

A little while ago I witnessed something incredible, at least to me. The 2 keets we had left with the hen to raise, walked out from under her and walked across the coop to the enclosure where their real mother and siblings are located. The boards are high enough that they could not see Gertrude...

Since yesterday afternoon, another 5 guinea eggs have hatched. Two of the broody hens we used have only been sitting a couple weeks so they didn’t mind that we took 3 of the keets and placed them with Gertrude. She now has a full dozen babies to care for. We left 2 keets with a hen to try to...
