I am well aware of Murphy's law and have experienced them all first hand despite what facts say about Canadians. Keep doing what you are doing buddy (maybe chuck in a bit of corn just to please me on those really cold snaps).
@ Tenchicks Murphy's Law says that at some point your chickens will experience -45º wind chill. My advice to you would be to feed extra corn through the winter (can not speak for silkies) but I am sure most of your flock will surprise you. Wishing you nothing but the best buddy. I personally...
Winter Peg is as famous for cold. Moncton is famous for snow. We held the worlds record for amount of snow in 24 hours. It may have recently been broken by Newfoundland I am not sure.
In Canada I am subject to -40º cold snaps. I do NOT heat my coop. Murphy's law says my birds will find out...
I have been around the sun 63 times.
I live in Canada (Indian for COLD) Snaps reach-40.
I do not heat my coop.
Feed extra corn for extra cold.
Lost birds to heat never to cold.
Works for me.
My temperature inside the coop would not be 5º different from the ambient air temperature outside the coop.
That -40º temperature I experienced last winter is I must confess was with the wind chill factor added in I actually think the ambient air temperature that day was around -28º if I...
I live in Canada no heat @ -40º no problems.
Diary of last winter cold snap check out the link:

They get excellent egg production and happy hens.
If you are...
Attitudes like this will weaken the chicken gene pool.
Soon you will have chickens that are allergic to peanut butter, tuna, shell fish, perfume, chalk dust, and cat hair.
Wish I could think of some relevant examples where pampering lead to something similar..
I have been around the sun 63 times.
It is not my first "Rodeo!"
Nobody "I know" heats a chicken coop.
Healthy "cold hearty" chickens die from heat not cold.
I live in Canada last year was subject to -40º (C or F take your pick) no light or heat in coop NO PROBLEMS.
Chickens have been...

I do not stop my water from freezing. I replenish my water fresh every morning in rubber buckets. It pops out easy peasy. and fill the container with fresh water daily. Sometimes twice a day (check for eggs twice a day) in bitter cold so eggs do not freeze. I live in Canada and was subject to...
I had the same problem with a Delaware Rooster in my coop last year. I just let mother nature run it's course. He still has points this winter but they are not as large. No problems thus far but winter is not a month old yet.
