Definitely agree. Even if an avian vet is available, it is advisable to learn as much as we can ourselves...mistakes are make in people medicine all time.
Some of what I've read about Baytril is the fluoride containing derivatives have high oral availability, and quickly absorbed in the GI tract and widely distributed to the tissues. Which explains why people use it. Research has found residues in liver and kidney. (I'm not okay with that. I...
In researching about the different antibiotics there's not very many that I would feel okay about giving to my birds. One question that is not really answered, and saw that there has not been much research on it, is the antibiotic residue. Most antibiotic warnings say to not give to laying...
I found an avian veterinarian not too far away (about 35 min.) who sees chickens! There are actually two vets at the clinic who see chickens, and quite often. Not because they own chickens, but because of the need. So, the clinics are changing, and will likely have to change more with the...
Those who don't practice bio-security and good flock management practices now may be forced to when they try to buy the OTC meds to dump in their birds' water as their normal disease control practice.
I would step up my search for a veterinarian, and would drive up to 1 hour away. If no vet available, convince a local vet to do a gram stain. I would not guess which antibiotic to use, as I am doing now, and do not like it. I am currently searching for vet.
I bought the fish amoxicillin last week at a local feed store. This one is called Fishbiotic. It was the last one. Can antibiotics be stored in the freezer? There was a penicillin fish med there also, and oxytetracycline, and penicillin G for turkeys.
I looked at the government website of what drugs are affected and didn't see amoxicillin listed, or did I miss it? If it's not listed does that mean that one can still be purchased?
I also worked in a veterinarian office, and even if a vet sees birds it depends on if they're in the mood to see your bird. So, you have to be careful to call on the right day.
I agree 100% about the microbes. I think antibiotics are being used ignorantly and is especially damaging being used as a preventative of disease by some flock owners. Hopefully, this new legislation will force veterinarians to become educated and care more about treating poultry.
