@shawn3295 I typically throw a cross or two in with my basque hatches just to have a 'hybrid vigor ruler' to measure them against. Haven't done JGs, but yes with Australorps and the cross pullet are great egg layers.

Yes... no feathered feet. Some times we get feather stubs on the shanks, which are a DQ.

I've had such a low hatch rate this spring, I'd be embarrassed to ship. My third setting is out this past weekend, so I should have started pullets on into the summer.

Ya he was the sole survivor of the dog attack where I lost twenty five... He was so happy when I brought those chicks out of the brooder. They would cluster up at night and he would just step right into the middle of them and settle in like an old hen! They are the batch that hatched in the...

Hi CackleJoy! I still plan on getting back to you - It's been crazy busy around here! Just set 73 more this past Sunday. The ALBC has three great PDFs that are as good a place as any for getting started learning how to select. The feathers are just that - feathers.. it's what's under the hood...

@ laura Many North American Basques tend to run a bit light in the markings. I find that my pullets are the most evenly barred right as they hit POL. And the hens get lighter with each successive molt. Here's a properly shaded Spanish pullet. Her tail angle is a bit high.

@ FVRM - It's a very large chicken swap just a little north west of Richmond VA, probably 20 minutes off of I95.

I keep Australorps, Black Coppers, Easter Eggers, and Barred Rock mixes here in addition to the Basques. It's 11°, 10 mph wind out of the North, gusting to 20, and the the Basques are the only birds out moving around. Either they are dumb - or they are just tougher. They don't care when it's...

That's a tough call... You'd do better to hatch everything from both hens, in pedigree cages, then mark the chicks and track their growth. Noting as your go along, which pairing had better vitality and vigor. Then make your decision for the next pairings after that. Remember, numbers are your...

Hey Curtis - I lost my lead cock to a Fox last summer, and my hatch rates were below 50% with my reserve boy. The reserve also has recessive white, and I know a couple of my hens have it too, so I really don't want to move forward until I can replace him. The eggs taste great, but I wouldn't...
