    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Ok, I must be a crazy chicken person... Those naked necks creep me out. Like, seriously. They remind me of vultures or turkey buzzards. Ewww. LOL, I guess they just aren't the chickens for me!

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Wow, ya'll waited longer than I did to integrate. I put mine out at 6 weeks...put them inside the coop in a metal dog crate. No supplemental heat, and we've had temps dip in the low 20's at night. I left them in the crate for a few days then let them out into the coop with the hens and Rooster...

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

5 chicks from this hatch, and 2 Tolbunt Polish that are 4 months old. So there are 7 total to snuggle with each other.

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Well, I bit the bullet and put the chicks out yesterday. Our high was in the 40's, but the sun was shining, and the movable pen is right in direct sun. So they spent the day in the pen, then I put them in the coop (in a dog cage) with the bantams. I think we dipped into the high 20's or low 30's...

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I took the ecoglow out at 2 or 3 weeks, and they have been in 70-75 degree temps ever since (the den temperature fluctuates...which is where the brooder is...based on when the sun hits that side of the house and if/when we run the woodstove, which is in the same room). I thought about taking...

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

That's just not an option for me. There is no way for me to put them out in the coop while offering them some form of supplemental heat. When they go out there, it will be going from 70 degrees in the brooder to whatever the temp is outside.

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

How many girls? It is going to take some time for the bantams to warm up to the newcomers, so they will be separated inside the coop in a metal dog crate. Will the 5 chicks plus the 2 polish be enough birds to snuggle together for warmth???

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Hello fellow hatchers :) I'm hoping some of you are still following this thread. I need some advice. Temps here have been very cold. One of the longest winters on record...I'm sure it's not just here in VA. The chicks are 8 weeks old today. At this age, I would have already had them...

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I process my extra roos when they reach 17 weeks of age. At that point, their aggressive side is just beginning to show (if there is any aggression). I can't keep all the roos...and having just started raising chickens last spring, haven't been to swaps to try to get rid of them (the...

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Got some updated pics of my gender-confusing chicks. If I base what they look like on my last two batches of chicks (from last spring), I have 2 roos and 3 pullets. What do ya'll think??? Chick 1: Pullet? Chick 2 (pullet?): Chick 3 (definite cockerel...red wattles, huge comb, bold...

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I shared on another thread, but wanted to share here too (and to brag )... Kalli, our chocolate lab, whelped her first litter on Thursday! I'm the proud "grandmama" of 7 adorable puppies!!! All are healthy and nursing like champs! She had 2 chocolate males, 3 chocolate females, 1 yellow...

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I must not have enough birds for the waterer inside the coop not to freeze. I'm taking it out every morning, thawing it in the sink with hot water, filling it back up, and taking it back out. Have had one waterer crack on the bottom already, so I'm using my spare until I get to the feed store!

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

Took pics of the babies today...3 weeks old. Now their gender really has me confused. As a reminder, they are Barred Rock roo over Barred Rock or Commercial Black (hatchery BR cross). If I go by length of the two rows of feathers at 3 days, I have 5 girls. If I go by the speed of growth of...

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I am thinking the same as all of you. Ironically, chick #4 happens to be the chick with the wing feathers that grew the fastest. She is also almost all black. Really light, small head spot. Miracle...if ya'll remember her...was a pullet as well. What a shame she didn't make it. I think chick #3...

Ok, sex guessers...feel like giving my 5 a go? Barred Rock roo over Barred Rock or Commercial Black (hatchery BR cross). Chick 1: Chick 2: Chick 3: Chick 4: Chick 5:

When you're done with yours, can you come build me one? LOL LOVE IT!!! Oh my, a Prepper's dream !!!!! I hope you find someone. There has got to be a lawyer somewhere who can represent you. In the meantime, I'd call your local paper and tv news...I know one of our local news stations here...

    5th Annual BYC New Year's Day 2014 Hatch-A-Long

I'm still sitting on my hands. I'm DYING to set more, but I don't have anywhere to put the hatchlings, since my brooder is occupied by my NYD hatch, and I don't want to worry about the NYD babies pecking away at the new babies. So I'm sitting on my hands until I know that by the time those in...
