Wow, ya'll waited longer than I did to integrate. I put mine out at 6 weeks...put them inside the coop in a metal dog crate. No supplemental heat, and we've had temps dip in the low 20's at night. I left them in the crate for a few days then let them out into the coop with the hens and Rooster...

Well, I bit the bullet and put the chicks out yesterday. Our high was in the 40's, but the sun was shining, and the movable pen is right in direct sun. So they spent the day in the pen, then I put them in the coop (in a dog cage) with the bantams. I think we dipped into the high 20's or low 30's...

I took the ecoglow out at 2 or 3 weeks, and they have been in 70-75 degree temps ever since (the den temperature fluctuates...which is where the brooder is...based on when the sun hits that side of the house and if/when we run the woodstove, which is in the same room). I thought about taking...

That's just not an option for me. There is no way for me to put them out in the coop while offering them some form of supplemental heat. When they go out there, it will be going from 70 degrees in the brooder to whatever the temp is outside.

How many girls? It is going to take some time for the bantams to warm up to the newcomers, so they will be separated inside the coop in a metal dog crate. Will the 5 chicks plus the 2 polish be enough birds to snuggle together for warmth???

I must not have enough birds for the waterer inside the coop not to freeze. I'm taking it out every morning, thawing it in the sink with hot water, filling it back up, and taking it back out. Have had one waterer crack on the bottom already, so I'm using my spare until I get to the feed store!
