I agree with your position on the comb. A comb flaw may be a relatively small point cut but at the same time the comb is very noticable & the eye can be drawn to that small point cut affecting the impression the bird makes. Judges & experienced breeds may be able to see past this but many...

I'm familiar with the strain you purchased & it's a good one. Your pictures make it hard to evaluate the birds. Try new pics with more chicken & less scenery. Best is if they're standing on a flat surface & the picture is shot straight on rather than down on the bird. ETA: in another post you...

Can't tell much about type but the colour is very nice.

I wouldn't know where to begin to comment on these birds. I will answer a question you asked: squirrel tails are a DQ but the bird you pictured with the question doesn't have one.

In ducks it's generally the ones with the best color that develop the white feathers. I came across a nearly all white "Black" East Indie Duck in a sale pen one time. She had excellent type, bill & leg color. All the others had been sold & were waiting to be picked up. The seller said she was 3...

I bred Golden Campines for a few years & I single mated. Had both males & females make it to Champion Row so i'd have to say you can single mate successfully.

They're too rarely seen to make much of an impact. We see an occasional Welsummer here in the North East but I don't remember the last time I saw a living, breathing Barnevelder. ETA: On the one or two occasions I recall judging Welsummers [don't remember there being more than 3 in the class]...

I can't get over the colour on the front bird in the last picture. I get so used to seeing poor quality birds on this site that it's stunning to see a bird like this. Buff is a surprisingly difficult colour to breed and it's unusual to see such even colour. Kudos.

Ever hear of Murphy's Law? If you keep just one he's die. Keep three & they'll all be fine.

I use hatching baskets made of hardware cloth. I thing they give the chicks more freedom of movement than sacks do. The sack is an additional barrier to overcome in addition to the shell.

Great story. I really like those kind of connections. When I was sworn in as a Judge I used my Grandfather's Bible from 1898.

It doesn't take long at all. You can do a lot of damage in one generation with a single bad breeding decision. For the most part hatcheries are interested in quantity not quality. They will produce birds that largely resemble the breed like yours, but fall short of quality. They're generally...

Try Duane Urch. I had Giants from him several years ago & they were massive. Males routinely went 14+ pounds withs shanks about an inch & a half in diameter. Showed them against the President of the Giant Club a couple of times & beat him both times. Did what I usually do: worked with them a few...

Wait until they have molted into their adult plumage before you make any decisions. Often purple sheen on juvenile plumage will be replaced with green sheen on adult plumage.

Not a bad idea with any black bird. I raised Black Rosecombs for many years & would occasionally keep a male with some red in his hackle to strengthen the green sheen on females. Got this tip from an old ABA Judge who sold me my first Black Rosecombs. I've talked to some current, well known...
