Thanks for the caution of common sense, aart! You make a good point and that needs to be considered.

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

I love the idea of the sticky cling wrap! I hate to use something that keeps from them from jumping on it, because they like it so much. That would work perfectly! I'm still using my heat plates and love them.

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

I put a small light in the coop that I turn on around roosting time. That tends to help. It is not fun trying to wrangle chicks out of gross corners, is it?!

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

How did I miss that?! I can't wait to read through that thread. Thanks! I just ordered a 2nd Premier heat plate, but could really use about 2 more. I can't justify spending all that $. ;)

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

You guys should start a new thread and link it in here on these cool homemade chick brooders you've made. I'm sure people are looking for ideas like yours that work and they may not find it in this thread. They're great ideas!

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

Leah's Mom and Bluewater.....you both have good points. When I noticed that "hot" feel I raised the plate. When I checked it again yesterday it didn't feel as horribly hot....which lead me to believe that it might overheat at times. Although, using it in an 75-80 area with no airflow...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

Well....somehow I ended up with more chicks! Out came the heat plate again and things have been fine. I decided to raise it a bit today and noticed the thing was HOT. I've seen people mention that before and thought they might just have sensitive skin. lol Mine was never hot....until now...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

It's been safe & reliable for me and several others on this thread. It's something I've had to adjust to since I like to just see a light and see how the chicks are acting under the bulb so I know all is well. The quality seems fine to me.

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

I started this thread WAY back and thought I'd chime in now that I've used the heat plate all chick season. Works GREAT! I may consider a second plate. I put my last batch of chicks outside in a brooder/hutch with the heat plate, and they've done wonderfully. The biggest concern I had was...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

Wow -- so sorry for all of your losses. I'm guessing you may have lost quite a few already because of them being chilled during shipping - especially since the hatchery told you that. Then I tend to agree with the others that the middle chicks may be suffocating and squished by the others...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

I'm sure I had it WAY too low. :( It's not horrible on any of them, but I can see a spot/mark here and there. I have it up much higher now.

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

I'm a little embarrassed to admit this, but I've noticed a few of my chicks have what looks like small callouses or burns on their back and top of head. A few also seem to have bald spots on their backs from where they must be pressing up against the plate. I'm not sure if that's what has...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

Quote: I was wondering if the heat plate would work with poults. Would it work for Broad Breasted poults? I have 10 coming in May and I'm usually done with chicks by then. So, I could use it for the poults?

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

Thanks! Mine have just started sitting on it during the day and staying out much longer. I'll probably move them to a lower wattage heat lamp (unless spring magically appears sometime soon). If they don't use it, great! So, would you say that 20 chicks really only need that plate A LOT is...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

My bantam chicks are doing well under the heat plate, but I do have two regular chicks that are now 2 weeks old. It's hard to imagine that 20 chicks that size would fit under there. So, my question is at what age do they no longer need that heat plate? I'm going to move them into a new...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

Another update: I really like the plate - it's working very well. My garage is around 40-45 and they're doing just fine. The only problem I've run into is that they come running out as soon as they see light. That's been a problem with our garage at night because they seem to have trouble...

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

I would be concerned that they'd have enough room as they grow, but I'm hoping to sell 6 of the big chicks. Although, they currently have plenty of room. Actually, I counted the bantams as 1/2's when I was adding things up to see if I could put them all under it. LOL

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

I got the 20-chick heat plate. I have a total of 17 chicks using it - 8 are regular chicks and 9 are bantams.

Is anyone using the Premier "heat plate" brooder for chicks?

Update on heat plate: I combined all of the5-6 day old chicks, some of which were using a heat lamp, into a regular brooder now with just the plate. They have lots of room to run around. After standing around screaming for a while, they've all figured it out. They'll be running around...
