I tried rock island eggs twice and none ever started. letus know if you have any luck. trader joes on the other hand I've hatched about two dozen already last year. trying local farmers market eggs this year.
Its alive but its leg is bandaged up so it cannot bend it, so its laying flat on its stomach. It hasn't even learned to stand up yet. I hope this wont retard it's growth or development. I put blu kote on the wound. It seemed to start healing when I opened the old bandage, so hopefully it can...
hmm one of my new TJ chicks has a big hole at the knee, its not able to stand up. Can see the joint bone and tendon. I wrapped it with bandages for now, but thats sad for that chick. Not sure if its a birth defect or the others pecked it.
In the brooder, its mixed with my coturnix quails for now, and a farmer's market egg (looking like EE), all hatched one week earlier.
In the hatcher
The humidity did finally go up at day 20 and now its very high and lots of condensation.
Its the morning of day 22 now, and so far, this is the most successful hatch I've had so far. All 24 went into lockdown, and right now, 20 are out of their eggs. 6 are in the brooder and 14 are still in the hatcher. 2 more eggs are pipped and 2 with no action yet. I used a hova bator forced air...
2 dozen TJ eggs in lockdown now. Hatch day is saturday. Some of them look like quitters around day 10 but i still saw movement, but about 1/3 of the egg was still liquid...
TJ has two boxes that look very similar. One is cage free eggs, and the other is fertile eggs. They have a green top on it. They both say Trader Joe eggs on the big title, and under it, one is cage free and the other says fertile eggs. You want the fertile eggs one.
Oh wow! All 2 dozen TJ eggs are fertile and started! Thats great fertility! I bought the eggs when they were a week old so its quite fresh. I hope my hatch goes well, and have lots of new peeps!
I have 2 dozen TJ eggs in the bator since saturday, and it looks like a MAJORITY of them are fertile and going!! WOOT! Will confirm again in another day or two when its more clear. IN the meantime, I also have 5 farmers market eggs that seem to be going too (out of 6). And a dozen coturnix quail...
So it seems to me that trader joe's fertile hatching eggs have the best fertility. I have 2 dozen rock island fertile eggs from Lucky and guess what, none of them are fertile. For a comparison, I have half a dozen eggs from the farmers market that keeps roosters with the flock, 5 of the 6 are...
So my hatch is over.
I started with 12 TJ eggs. Ended up with 7 for lockdown. Of those 7, 5 hatched. One hatched on day 20, three on the morning of day 21, and the last one on the afternoon of day 21. The two non hatched eggs were late quitters.
I hatched these eggs while also incubating...
4 hatched so far and one pipped. i broke all the rules :) i helped them out and took them out before they fluffed up. will post woke pictures when i get them off the camera.
My TJ eggs went into lockdown today. I saw movement in the last candling. There are 7 eggs that made it this far out of 12, not bad for just under 3 dollars of eggs.
I tried to get a set from whole foods but when I cracked them open, only 1 of 4 were fertile so I didn't try. I will get a trader joes set next time after I get my quail eggs...
