Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Well we never lost power, but you're right, moisture got in the control box :( I opened it up and there was ice in there. I dried it all well and tried doing what you suggested but it's dead. I heard it was supposed to get down to 10 tonight so I made a trip to our supermarket and fortunately...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Ok question for you seasoned chicken owners! We had a blizzard here in MD and got 32"! Anyway, I just got out to them today since Friday night and they're doing fine. The heating pad quit at some point since Friday. It was off when I went out there, and it won't come back on. I'm trying to...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I am also using paper towels over the shavings. My arch frame is made with coated chicken wire and I did have 2 chicks get stuck. Scared me to death! So I took the frame out and covered the underside with duct tape. They really like to squeeze themselves into every nook and cranny! I pile the...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

They can die if their vent is plugged. I just had a chick with a case of it last night. It is so hard to get off, but I got a little bowl / ramekin and soaked her butt in warm water for a couple of minutes. Then I went back to wiping it with a damp paper towel and was able to get it all Off. It...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I had this same issue as my coop build was delayed. They were in my house until 3 weeks. Before I put them in the coop, I put them in my garage for about 4 days. During that time it got COLD. My garage gets almost as cold as the outside air so it was down to the mid 30s in there at night. They...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Great info, thank you! They've been in the garage for a few days and nights now and are still doing great. I noticed them sleeping on top last couple of nights, so I turned it down a notch. I was going to put them in the coop with the heating pad tomorrow but I just read it could get down to...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

You're so right, and I remember you saying that! When I looked in on them this morning, they were inside the cave, so they must've gotten cold at some point. But they came running out to greet me once they heard me talking to them. It's pretty amazing how tough these little guys are!

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

I raised the frame and made them go in, but they came right out and hopped on top. I just checked on th again and they're sleeping on top. I guess they're ok. I'm just really surprised they don't want to be under it!

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Ok thanks! They're huddled on top, very quietly chirping. I'm scared, but I know I need to let them be chickens. I'll prob get up tonight and check on them a couple times!

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

My husband asked me that...when I shoo them in there, they can go. Should it be high enough that they don't have to duck down? As it is now, they can't really stand under it.

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

They are just 3 weeks old. I don't have a thermometer to say exactly how cold the garage is. It's attached to my house on 3 sides. It's currently 37 outside and calling for it to get down to 30 tonight. They've been out there since this morning and I don't think I saw them under MHP all day...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Nervous Nellie question: the chicks have been in my garage with MHP during the day for the last couple of days. They seem to be doing great. I'm contemplating leaving them in there tonight. It's not quite as cold today. I turned the garage light off and I thought they'd go under MHP but when I...

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Around here, they're in pretty high demand so I think I'll be able to sell them pretty easily. I really hope i have at least 2 hens out of these 3, but we'll see! I don't think I could eat these guys...they're my first chicken babies and I'm totally attached!

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

The tub I have them in is about 3x2. I plan to get them into the coop In the next week or so depending on how they tolerate the cold. So far they're taking it like champs! And it's really cold here today! They are indeed my first chickens ever :) so I'll turn my 4x6 coop into a brooder when...

Haha so true, I've been going out there every 5 min to check! I'm happy to report, they are going in and out and jumping on top and eating / drinking just like they did in the house! And my garage is probably 40 degrees right now. Thank you all for reading my posts and answering all my questions!

Mama Heating Pad in the Brooder (Picture Heavy) - UPDATE

Ok so I just put the brooder in the garage, turned their heating pad up to 6. They happily stayed eating and drinking for a while and then moved under MHP. They're not huddled and they're peeping the normal sound they make when they're just walking around (when they were in the house.) if they...
