Yay! That was a long wait :) I think my Buff was about that long, but my Red Sexlinks were already laying so it made it easier to wait.
Yay! That was a long wait. I think my Buff took almost that long, but since my Red Sexlinks were already laying it made it easier to wait.
My Reds didn't start laying until about 22 weeks, and only a couple of weeks before my Buff Orpington started laying. Someone here said his started at 14 weeks, but I think that is very unusual. My Buff has never gotten the really red cheeks or a very red comb, but I figured it's just her...
I think they were 22 weeks. One of the three is still not laying....I have four chickens, but I get three eggs a day.
Although she may be laying sporadically, just to keep me confused .....I have gotten a couple of eggs that were speckled like bird eggs.
She was injured when she was...
I know ....the waiting is awful.
Someone else had the same chickens I did (my others are Red Sexlink) and they started getting eggs weeks before mine.
Not sure why.
Well, I'm trying, just to recoup some of my expenses, but so far the only people interested are too far away
I looked at what comparable eggs are selling for at the store, and offered them for slightly less (mine are organic).
If you already have a clientele, then you are ahead of the game...
I hear you on the patio poop. I let mine out every day to run around the yard while I clean their run. They go back in when they stop digging for bugs and start hanging out by the door and pooping on the patio I built a second floor out of poultry wire above the tray, so the poop falls...
Well, I tried this today with a large soda bottle, since I don't have any milk jugs.
I laid it in the run where they were hanging out. They didn't seem to know what to think....pecked at the bottle and jumped back and forth across it.
It's back in the freezer tonight, and I'll put it out again...
Mine have been making weird noises for weeks, but no eggs. One was "squatting" but the others were not.
I didn't hear anything from them today, but there were the two first eggs this morning and another two this afternoon.
WHOOHOO!!
Just when I had given up hope.....TWO eggs! The girls laid them at night, maybe because it is so stinking hot during the day right now.
I get to join the egg club!
I hadn't though about that. I don't have any milk jugs but maybe I can figure something else out.
Poor things...I see them panting, even though their run is shaded and the coop is under a shade tree. I insulated the roof of the coop because I knew the summers were hot, but I'm not sure that...
::::Sigh:::::then maybe that's the problem. They have red combs, red cheeks, and a couple of them have been making noises that sound like they might have an egg, but nothing.
Yes, I am in the Temecula area....it sounds like you might be a little further north, and a couple of degrees hotter...
MIne are 21 weeks and still nothing
And they are supposed to be a breed that starts laying early.
Does the heat make a difference? It's been hot and humid here.
