As far as free-ranging, it depends on the birds. Show quality birds should never be free-ranged. Some time on the grass with direct supervision, yes. But never free ranging in the true sense of the word.

Vaulted skulls should not be petted or rubbed. Brain damage can occur, regardless of age. Silkies should never free range. Never ever. You will most certainly lose them. Even the hatchery silkies aren't likely to do well free ranging.

You're welcome and thank you;-)
I'm afraid you are in for heartache/headache if you are going to let them live in the weather. lol Silkies are not like chickens in that they are not weather-proof. The bird above is kept in a show cage on kitty litter, as I learned from Dragonlady. Otherwise...
I like the type on your blue the best and her color is good also - though I don't breed blue silkies I do have blue birds of different breeds. The gray's comb is fine! Especially for a gray. All look to have good wings and I don't see any red leakage on your gray so that is a plus. If you...
Most hard core silkie exhibitors do not sell hatching eggs. You would do better to purchase started birds from them. If you must have eggs (and I understand that!), I'd suggest Geri Godina or Tonya Morris. You can find them on FB and they almost always have eggs for sale.
So many "breeders" claim show quality despite the fact that they have never shown nor looked at a standard. No, steer clear of the red comb. As far as crests, you can get nice crests from the breeding you mentioned. Some like huge crests (like myself) and others like a "medium" sized crest as...
If you want to show and/or breed to the standard, this bird is not show quality by any means...appears to be unbearded but regardless those wattles are huge.
Hmmmm....always hard with pics but the first one looks feminine and the second one looks more like a boy to me. The comb on the lighter one is a little big but comb size often varies with lines, I have found. They are some chesty little buggers...may I ask what line(s)? They look very filled...
Okay, I don't see the wings looking bad here except in the bottom pic of Jangle - but that could be the way she is positioned. And wings mature along with the bird, it was just the last pics that looked iffy. I like to see a bigger crest at this age, but not all would agree. Wait a month or so...
Actually, I was going by beak shape and overall proportion (such as head to body). Of course it is too soon to be sure, but if I had the bird in hand I could be more certain one way or the other. I am almost always right when sexing mine from very young, but then lines differ as well. The...
At this age it is really anyone's guess but the wings worry me some. (Bottom pics). Foot feathering could be better. Pics of them not pouting so we can see their natural shape would be ideal.
I cannot comment on the white...I am no fan of showgirls and have no clue as to what would be ideal to breed to one. I would "think" however, that you might be able to find a nicer one.
How old? He looks like a nice breeder, I would personally like to see more chest, and lower there too. If he is young that may improve. I see a lot of boys who are too "tall" for my taste. But nice shape otherwise. Looks like a nice comb too! He looks dark for a blue, but not black correct?
Check this out...??? Why is the interest level so high?

No, I was just referencing how much different silkies seem in many ways, just in general. Yes, silkie feathering...but what about walnut combs? Are silkies the only chicken with the walnut comb?
