I've never taken the time to research GMO before, so my knowledge is very limited. I just thought I'd mention that both of those sources are biased. Do you have any scientific studies? I don't support GMO, I just thought I'd ask.

I've been struggling with fertility too. Only half of the silver laced cochin bantam eggs were fertile and none of the black cochin bantam eggs were. I need to get hatching, so I learned how to AI today. It was easier than I thought it'd be.

No kidding. Our barn door flew off, so the chicken's woke up to about 5 inches of snow covering half their coop. It must have blown in. The chickens are grumpy and refuse to walk on it, however, the ducks are having a party. It's going to be such a mess on Wednesday...

I recently took out half of the nesting boxes (they were getting old) and afterwards I noticed that the eggs weren't freezing any more. Since they only had a few nesting boxes left, they began taking turns to lay. This way the eggs are always covered. I don't know if this would work for...

What breed is your best layer in the winter? Cochins What breed of yours returns to laying the earliest? Cochins hmm... I guess I should mention that other than a polish, a brahma, and a silkie, my entire flock is cochins. They can be good layers depending on their line. I have a 7 year...

So true... I'm honestly amazed that my birds are tolerating these temperatures so well.

Really? Mine are starting to lay nicely. I even got a couple eggs from my 7 year old cochin hens today. The problem is I still haven't gotten my breeding pens up... Looks like it's going to be a late hatching season.

A hen pulls her under feathers out when she's broody. She does it so that her skin can directly touch the eggs she is brooding to warm them. The feathers also add to the nest. Usually a broody hen gets off of her nest once a day to eat, drink, and poop.

Thanks. He is showing improvement. The swelling and blisters are slowing going down and he's using his leg as if nothing happened. I have high hopes that he will recover with 2 functioning legs.

Here's a craigslist ad for muscovy ducks. It looks like they're about an hour drive from Buffalo. It'd be best to get him muscovy friends rather than chickens. http://minneapolis.craigslist.org/ank/grd/4256676716.html

Ok, thanks! I can't bring him into the house, but he can stay in our heated garage for a while. I feel awful about what happened. I had just put him outside on Sunday. I should have known that he was too young to be out in these temperatures.

I found one of my poor babies with a frozen foot tonight. He's a 3 month old LF partridge cochin and I brought him into the garage to warm up. His foot is now hot and is 4 times the size it should be. I'm giving him water with vitamins and electrolytes. Is there anything else that I should...

At the time I was fairly new to chicken keeping and I did not send them in for necropsies. I explained the deaths on a thread here on BYC and immediately fellow members began asking me what I fed them. The symptoms fit and once I switched feeds, I didn't lose any more birds. Excess calcium...
