you already said that you didn't want cubalayas or game chickens so i don't think saladin could help you. what kind of game chicken did you say that you raised in the past? you should be able to find plenty of swedish flower hens at a local chicken swap if thats what you are looking for.

if you like the gamefowl colors but don't like the gameness, you should try cubalayas. they are great layers of medium sized tinted or light brown eggs. good to eat and look good in your yard. cocks are 5 to 6 lbs. and hens 3 to 4 lbs. they are not game. a rare breed that needs more dedicated...

was it fade or fad breeding? what is the big fad this year? we never had lavender or chocolate orpingtons, coronation sussex, or swedish flower hens because they seemed like fad breeds. i have been breeding for type first and then color. is this the wrong thing now?

cubalayas are good broodies and they are very good to eat. they are pretty good layers too and look good in your yard. the cocks are not manfighters or mean but very tame around humans. they can forage a good amount of their own food and thrive on freerange. a very sustainable dual purpose bird.

i would go with the delawares. good meat, big, brown eggs and foragers. they also are rare and need breeders. we had dominiques for years and while very hardy and good layers, not great for meat. also never had a nice dominique rooster. all of them were mean.

have hatched some nice ones this spring: black australorps, cubalayas, and some heritage delaware chicks. i seem to be getting a few white sports from my cubalayas. will see if i can get some nice red pyles off them or just keep a white strain.
