I honestly think that chicks brought up in the flock are just nicer birds...maybe not as lap friendly, but calmer, braver and... i guess I just don't know exactly how to describe it...they just seem more self assured or something like that?

Bee... a couple of videos of all of our current broodies enjoying their flock time... I am active on the Old Fashioned Broody Hatch a long thread, and the Broody Hen thread... took these to use to show folks that chicks are much, much hardier than many give them credit for, especially when...

Although the Rocks are near and dear to me I do love the Light Sussex also.... I have 4 youngsters now, and hens sitting on 4 more eggs... In broody news.... all 3 of the trio of sisters who raised their chicks together in March are now parked in nest boxes again! 2 already have eggs, and the...

Glad the broody will have at least one chick to keep her happy! Hopefully a few WRs will join the party... We ended up with 6, almost all identical black and yellow fuzzy butts. We went to fish Lake Erie today, hoping they did good... headed home now.

I'm hoping some of the trends toward 'heritage' birds may help revive some interest in broodies... I know there are a lot of beautifully feathered birds out there now, and many 'awesome' egg layers and cool egg colors.... but I put more value on a good old fashioned 'plow horse' any day over a...

I am really hoping for a good hatch on your group!! It will be so cool to see a bunch of yellow fluffy butts showing up for you after all you have gone through! I hear a lot of folks lamenting about how 'horrible' their broodies are... but I am with you, I just see it as a good sign for how...

. Hoping they do well.... we should be seeing some cute yellow fluffy butts soon! we have a broody hatch due Thursday, they are a mix of eggs from hens who had been broody earlier in the spring. I think 6 SPR hen eggs and 3 Black Giant hen eggs.... rooster is either a full Black Australorp, a...

Yep, you never know...so you do what you can, when you can...and enjoy it while you can! I see 'some days' slip away from people nearly every day at work... I know to cherish 'now' because later may not include everyone you want it to! But... since we can't count our chickens before they are...

Pre-planning...I figured by spring I will be able to deliver some SPR eggs and WR eggs from our coop if it continues to progress like it has. DH and I make trips there most springs so it would be an easy extension of our trip.

Bee, I hope do don't mind if I go 'off topic' for just a moment and post a request here.... If anyone in the Pennsylvania, NY, East Ohio, W. Virginia or Northern Maryland area has or knows someone who has some old fashioned White Leghorns who would have hatching eggs available I would love...

Bee, sorry to hear of the temperature spike but glad many seem to have survived. If your broody is still willing to sit then maybe you can give her 2 or 3 of them to keep her setting and graft your nest hatchers back to her after they dry

Dang... so sorry you lost one. Tis the season though, I believe with many of the predators now trying to raise their own young they are bolder about trying to find prey to take back for the youngsters. A lone fox or mink may be OK about a mouse or chipmunk here and there, but to feed a litter...

Awesome!! The could be no better memorial than one which so truly reflects the person whom it is for! For both my DH and I it is nearly the same, only it will be either the Chesapeake Bay (my family is from Southern Maryland) or Lake Erie (we camp and fish there all summer)

Sorry to hear that... hopefully some peace and quiet will give him some rest so he can fight it off... check out 'Vent Gleet' and see if that is what you are seeing with him... may need some yogurt or ACV...
