Same here. I don't have any breeders (that I have found) within 3 hours of me. But I have managed to get my hands on some birds from the best flocks in this part of the country.
Buckeye and Orpingtons are both great breeds! Are you going to try find a breeder? Buckeyes might be a little more practical for the winter as they don't have such big combs...
3riverschick I feel ya... I couldn't sell a dozen hatching eggs this year... Nobody was looking for them this year... Lastvyear I couldn't keep up and this year I had to hatch them all myself...
Hmm... I may have to try this... I have always preferred not cutting the heads off when I butcher but might try it... I imagine this would be too small for turkeys?
I like the feedsack method for ducks. Tie the bag by their back legs so the cant get inside the bag all the way and you're good to go... Maybe I will have to make a video on it when I bull cockerels...
I agree with Turk on this subject. Although some may not have the room. But if you could i would keep Monty too. Then if you have a roo even better than Andres this fall cull Monty and keep Andres and the better guy.
Thanks for all the info on long spurs! I guess I don't keep roosters around that long. I get a group of pullets from them eat them and get a new one or keep one back that's the most distantly related to the hens. Actually now I will only use Buckeye roosters for my flock Roos. Best roosters I...
