Sound of Silence 6am - No More Crowing

I would be worried about putting safety-pins on him. In my flock, one of the hens would peck at it and potentially open it up. Why not try velcro instead?

Who are you asking directly? There are lots of posts in this thread now from many people, including myself, who have tried various collars made with velcro, with varying success. The sock does not seem to have worked for anyone, since it's stretchy and the rooster can still crow. I recommend...

Oh gosh, I don't know what to say. It sounds like with a neighbor like that, there won't be much of a solution. You can try to befriend her as much as you can, but if your neighbor hates your rooster's crowing and you don't have a right to have a rooster (as opposed to it just not being...

I would think that socks would be too elastic. If there is any room for the throat to expand, then it won't make a difference. I think the key is getting some vertical flexibility, so they're not too uncomfortable, but not much horizontal flexibility. With my home-made collar, Desi still...

Yes, as annoying as my rooster is, my neighbor's dog and even my own are probably more so!

Hi Angel, did you have any success with the anti-bark bird-feeder device with your rooster? I've been wondering if I should give it a try. I don't want to annoy the hens with it, but I've been getting tired of Desi's (even slightly muffled) crowing lately.

It seems to me that it would be a lot easier to put a collar on a naked neck than on a feathery one! I would feel better with cloth or the soft side of the velcro on the neck for both feathered necks and non-feathered necks. I think the collar has made my roo lose most of his neck feathers...

Oh my, by now you may have had your court session. How did it go? It does sound that you've made it as tight as you can - the description of him laying his head down on the ground is worrisome. I don't think I would be comfortable with that (let alone my roo). The collar has not worked...

Hmm, I got one of those for my dog a long time ago. It worked temporarily, but it drains batteries quickly, and by the time I replaced the batteries, my dog had gotten immune to it and it didn't work on her anymore. Let us know how it works for your rooster.

OK, I have another update. This morning, when I let Desi out of the man cave, I saw he had a beak full of foam/phlegm or something. I got worried and took of his collar and was pretty quickly reminded of what his crows sound like without the collar. It's like a trumpet v. a kazoo! I then...

I posted about my collar attempts a few months ago. Desi is still wearing my third home-made collar, the one with 3 velcro strips sewn onto part of a cloth towel. He still crows with it, but it is quieter than it otherwise would be, and he does not seem bothered by it. I haven't adjusted it...

Great result, Capt! I wonder if the collars work better on small birds - the lady who sells them mostly has bantams. I can hear Desi crowing right now. I don't think he's as loud as he would be without the collar, but I haven't been able to get it right or tight enough to stop him from...

I tried putting Desi in the cat carrier in the crawl space overnight, and it actually worked well - for me at least, I doubt he was happy with it. I only heard noise once, and it wasn't quite a crow and it was just one time, as opposed to the many crows in a row he normally does, so I think the...

Thanks, that's very helpful information about the darkness/space to crow. I'm guessing that with my very determined rooster and the crawl space being underneath my house, it won't really solve the problem of his waking me up, though it would be a little quieter for the neighbors. At this very...

Sound of Silence 6am - No More Crowing

Putting Desi in a cat carrier inside the crawl space would be a fairly easy chore for myself to manage - not much more time than I already spend closing the run door and reopening it and giving them some morning scratch. But, the catch would be going away. In general, dealing with Desi will be...

Hi Ben. What's an OP? Your rooster box is way more impressive than anything I can imagine undertaking. Thanks for the link. I built my coop with help from a friend into the front deck of my house and built the run attached to it, but that's the extent of my building skills. I had a very...

Sound of Silence 6am - No More Crowing

Update: I had to remove the purchased collar and return to my collar #2 because Desi was crowing too loudly with the purchased one and I didn't think I could adjust it any tighter. I found that collar especially hard to adjust, for some reason, and already spent almost 10 minutes trying to get...

Thanks for appreciating it. I basically guessed on the size. When I was trying to decide what to use, I noticed that the strap on my knee brace looked similar to the width of the collars on the rooster collar facebook page, so I cut it off and used it. Collar #2, the most successful so far...

Sound of Silence 6am - No More Crowing

Hi, my young rooster started crowing a couple weeks ago and I have been experimenting with rooster collars (after finding this thread, thanks for starting it!), and I can only report mixed results. When the collar is adjusted as tightly as possible (without hurting him), my rooster can still...
