That happened to me, the legs getting darker as he got older, but he had other issues so I culled him; when I went to process him I discovered the bottoms of his feet were very yellow. So now I check there too.
I am sorry to hear of your bad experience, but thank you for the heads up. HOpefully this batch will turn out better. Did you contact the breeder? I would hope they made it right with you.
Cody & Pam Padilla have some really great stock! I just got 18 hatching eggs from their best show quality pens and put them in the incubator. I've seen their birds up close at shows and they are terrific.
aren't we glad that chickens do not reproduce like cats & dogs? I mean if it always meant a litter, we'd be overrun with them. At least we can control the number of offspring that are hatched.

Last year I had scrounged some bamboo screening out of a trash pile and wired it up on my fence on the west side of the pens; it helped cut the intensity of the afternoon sun. but the ducks destroyed it. This year I have some bits of shade cloth I'll do the same thing with, but I"m putting it on...
I think you will find this true in all breeds and in all domestic animals which may be bred for showing and winning prizes. Just think of all the dog breeds that now require intervention to survive and reproduce themselves.
