    Backyard Brahmas!!

My husband is very clear that he didn't want chickens, but he is mildly amused by my favorite chicken and that when he grabs a shovel she runs after him like a groupie after a boy band. He is very tolerant of her antics ...at least he hasn't "accidently" hit her with the shovel yet......

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Yes same here in Utah, we are high desert so this week it has hovered at 100 F and it gets down to 0 F regularly in the winter.

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Oh yeah my poor Brahma is hating this heat. We usually add a chunk of ice to the water bowl (a large metal dog dish) and she digs herself in and lays her side along it during the hottest part of the day. She is just so fluffy she is miserable.

    Backyard Brahmas!!

My hatchery stock Light started laying at a little over 6 mos old and lays 3-4 eggs a week. She eats enough for 3 standard size birds so not really an economical choice but she is very sweet and fun to watch and puts off a lot of heat in the coop in the winter keeping my skinnier girls warmer so...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Just so you have some references to look at that may help you as you watch....The tail feathers that count are the ones from the saddle, see those ponty ones coming in on this cockerels tail in front of the black tail feathers/ they are pointy compared to ....his female counterpart that has...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

5 weeks is usually too soon to be sure of anything and in another 3- 5 weeks or so you will want a pic of them standing taken from a side view as well as a really good straight on shot of the comb that is not at all blurry. I was pretty sure of my roo at about 8 weeks (and suspected by 6) just...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

I had a great rooster that has since gone off to live with a more appropriate flock. He was so gentle and easy going with humans when caught, and steered clear when he was not being captured. He would get a little posturing going on if I was capturing hens but never aggressive but I still would...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

My hen that has a bum leg from being herded down the steep hill too ambitiously a year ago appreciates a boost down from the roost every morning. She dutifully waits for quite awhile to be lowered gently unless someone is just ridiculously late getting out to the coop in the morning. I never...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Sometimes bumblefoot hides itself well. Make sure the feet are clean and inspect for any black spots. I have thought mine looked clear before but upon cleaning and strectching have found the black spot near the toes.

    Backyard Brahmas!!

I agree medicated feed is not really neccessary. I keep Corid on hand if I see a couple really runny poop in a row from a couple chickens/chicks when they are young and use it as stated above. I know they say they cant get it till they are out in the run but I am pretty sure mine came to me with...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Honestly not sure since they are from my local feed store that uses 3 of the large hatcheries. They are pretty, they have filled out niceley where they are hollow in the pics since they were still very young there. I suggest a lot of good food mine tried their best to eat me out of house and...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

My hatchery bird pics. The rooster is gone to a better suited home now with a harem of 30+ hens (my 7 mostly smallish hens were nowhere near enough for him).He turned out absolutely huge for a hatchery bird . The hen pictured is a treat mongering pushy butt, she lays about 3-4 eggs a week and...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Yeah by the face markings and leg color I would bet E.E. I really love mine, they are pretty skittish and bottom of the pecking order but tough, smart andventurous little laying machines.

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Thanks, I agree I own them for their eggs, poop, bug eating and antics. I think she is pretty cool, her real name is North but has aquired the nick name of "Bertha" as she is first to the dinner table with force and speed that would take out a small child lol.

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Ah, well, since this is the "Backyard Brahma" thread that is meant specifically for people who usually have hatchery stock you are right, she is not going to meet the sop. If I were to get a picture of her abundant fluff you are right, it is more grey tone under her feathers. If you go to the...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

@James Beller I don't understand your statement....so my bird is not a Brahma in your opinion? I am not an expert of course but since when I google "Brahma Chicken" a bird that looks exactly like mine is pictured on the "Livestock Conservancy" website as a light Brahama.... as well as the...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

The above pics are of my Light Brahma, she was admittedly about a week old there but she came to me at a couple days old that light. Her counterpart rooster was also that light as a chick.

    Backyard Brahmas!!

I got a couple Brahmas last year from the feed store so definitely hatchery birds. My rooster ended up being gigantic, the hen is big but not gigantic. She is about 10 lbs at a year, bigger than my very hefty Orpington but not as big as I thought she would be. I don't think mine will even put...
