    Golden Laced Wyandotte Thread!

Cottage Gal, it's hard to know how old they will be when they start to fight. It will be longer if there are no females with them. You can probably get to six months fine, and after that you're kind of on borrowed time, but it could be many months of borrowed time. If you are going to breed, I...

    Golden Laced Wyandotte Thread!

Is he a young bird? He doesn't (yet?) show the Wyandotte type I'd look for if he's a cock, but if he's a cockerel, he's got nice lacing and good wing carriage, so he might grow into his body better. The young ones often look like this. That said, good GLW males are not easy to come by, and he...

Honora, that is a very promising pullet.

GLW at that age should have very dark heads, more black than red.

Chicks ship well. The last batches I've had came with grow gel and heating pads, and they were in great shape. The most likely place to send you would be Duane Urch in Minnesota. He won't be shipping chicks again until next January, however.

Cute baby GLW out of our Urch line birds. We have some silvers growing up too that are intended for crossing with our GLW cock next year. Looking forward to seeing how these grow out!

I would suggest going for chicks rather than eggs from GLW if it's at all an option. Shipped eggs are difficult at best, and the ride through the post office does them no favors.

I am a 4-H leader and here are a couple of thoughts from that perspective. First of all, GLW are a hard choice to start with. I'm not sure if you're talking bantams or large fowl, but both are relatively scarce and they are one of the more challenging varieties to show. They don't tend to be...

If you're looking for shape and comb, you're best looking at other varieties that win. There aren't a lot of really good GLW out there, so even a Best of Variety GLW might not be a great example for you. There are pictures a few pages back of some decent male GLW.

Our GLW rooster (Urch line) has always been a perfect gentleman, no problems. However, none of our Golden Laced particularly like to be handled. My daughter describes them as "flappy."

The color is quite nice in the pictures. I think newer pictures are needed to comment on shape, and then ideally you might weigh them to get a sense of how they are size-wise. The other thing to look for is a good spread behind in the tail, such that the tail feathers on the hens make a nice...

    Golden Laced Wyandotte Thread!

Although I do like the golden laced wyandottes, IMHO GLW are going to give you an uphill battle as a practical homestead bird. They seem to be the smallest of the Wyandotte varieties, they're slow to mature, and I'd say the egg laying is also not super reliable. And the color is difficult. As...

Quote: Good luck! It's a highly worthy project. How do you manage the logistics of hatching every egg? If you're hatching every week, does each cohort have to live in a separate brooder or can you combine them?

I've missed this thread before. My daughter is very interested in raising a nice line of golden laced LF Wyandottes. It has been extremely difficult to find birds to work with. We have a quite nice hen but I've had a heck of a time finding a roo to go with her. Finally, we have a cockerel plus a...

Wow, a bantam GL with a tail! I've seen some in California (my daughter owns a bantam hen as well), but serious bunny tails, yetch. Good luck with them! I'd love to see some nice GL Bantams established.
