I've kept chickens for several years, but just started breeding last year. I learned quickly that there are always roos left over. I'm going to try it one day. I'm not as concerned about the killing part as I am the cleaning. When the cockerels start trying to crow, I start shopping around for...
Day 19 for me as well. I have 10 WCBP, 8 d'uccle, and 2 cuckoo Marans that made it to lockdown. Had only one clear d'uccle, but 7 clear polish. My rooster definitely has his favorite ladies
Good luck! My first two hatches in a Brinsea stretched out to days 22-23. I bumped the display up 0.5 degree on my last batch, and all but one hatched on day 21. They were flying out like popcorn
I candle quickly just to see development, too. Pop them on the Ocuview, click-click, then back in the rack or discarded. I don't want to freak the chick out with the light for too long. I check at 8 days, again at lockdown, and that's it
Ok, slow day in here, so here's an update on my March 6 hatch. They moved to the outside brooder last weekend which was converted from one of my first coops, a little prefab from TS. It's my favorite brooder. They have almost found the roost
My intent was to sell these, but I am in love...
I'll process Marans all day long, but I can't bring myself to do that with a silkie. My friend loves them, but he is from further south than me. Much further south..,
Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was a coincidence. I only let the broodies hatch, and I was about 16 for 23 roosters last year. I'm not quite ready to invest in a centrifuge yet. Those girls will sit on anything, and I have a friend that will take any unwanted roosters off my hands, so I'm just going...
I wouldn't say I was expecting it to be low, but I was cautiously optimistic. My silkies have a very high hatch rate, but all of last year they were hatching 75% roosters, so I'm not even incubating them. With these longer days, two of them are already sitting anyway
Day 8 candling showed development in 8 of 9 d'uccle eggs. I'm excited about that, because two are pullets. 12 of 17 on the Polish. A little disappointed, but my rooster definitely has his favorites
If they aren't, don't get discouraged. I've had some go as long as 16hrs from first pip to first hatch, although my last batch had a 4hr pip to hatch on day 20. Good luck
I've been AWOL for a few days. All 22 of the last batch are thriving.
Why can't every hatch go like this?
Saturday I set 17 white crested black polish, 9 mille fleur/black mottled d'uccles, and 2 cuckoo marans (just to fill the empty space). This could be a good month
