Thank you so much for that info/opinion. We, of course, can't put water outside here .. or there would only be ice. I guess good ventilation may be the answer. But personality wise, do you think the geese would go after the chickens if they are confined. No option to confinement. I get...

Does anyone have experience with mixing a couple chickens with a couple ducks and a couple geese in the same coop, confined for most of the winter? I have a friend who has the ducks and geese and would like to add a couple of my chickens. Any opinions or experience would be most helpful!

I was rambling, sorry. They were all Buckeyes.

Summer got really busy for me so I've been absent from BYC for awhile. I'm going be a Gramma! And not to a chicken. Very excited about that. Thinking of selling my cabin and moving back to (closer to) Fairbanks. But I have to say that, in large part because of this Forum, I have two...

Oh my gosh, I'm so excited! She will be so happy to have a friend for her pet! I'm not sure how to proceed. Can you give me your number so she can call you? Or email? I'm new here. Is there a secure way of doing this so I don't have to post my/her phone or email? She would never "et him"...

I had no frost bite. Buckeyes have pea combs (almost not there) and no wattles that I can see! That and the fact that their feathers are tight, making them good cold weather chickens, are the reasons I have Buckeyes. Who knew that they would decide that feathers taste better than their food...

Boy, I hear you regarding the busyness and not having things done. I had the exact same determination about wood, getting it all in before this winter, and I have none. House needs to be stained .. gave up on that and the coop needs some work. My coop is actually great except for the door...

I have heard that there have been cases of Bedbugs in Anchorage during the past couple years. Unknown in AK before that. I don't know what category they are in and if they affect animals or not. All those almost microscopic critters. Hope I never SEE (or feel) one. This is a very slow...

I've tried to look it up online but can't find anything. I'm just assuming it's one of the plusses . . no snakes, no wood ticks, no raccoons (?) and no mites. Now that's worth living here! Plus the bears sleep in the winter .. what more can a person ask for?

I was reading a thread regarding the problems people have with chicken mites. I have never heard of a mite problem with chickens in AK. Is it true that there are no mites .. especially in the Interior?

Never knew a dog like that. Looks like you have things figured out.

Have you thought of running 1 or 2 electric wires around the outside of your fence? One zap and you won't have a problem anymore. If you put one wire close to the ground and one higher up you won't have to worry about raccoons or dogs. Just a thought. Dogs don't like pain. A shame not to...

I am sorry for YOUR losses. How horrible! Does the dog still live there?

    North to Alaska!

Sorry to admit that I am not really familiar with Forums and am not totally sure who I am replying to. LOL. Anyway, I have lost many chickens in 1 year. The first 3 were during the winter. Some of the hens were picking and I knew that had to stop or I would have NO chickens. Took out 4 of...

Salmon eggs! I was feeding my chickens Salmon and my friend said that the eggs will taste fishy! I quit giving them Salmon but never noticed the taste in any of the eggs. Wonder if this is actually true? Looks like you will be getting some heat for your coop from the house? I heard that...

What kind of chickens do you have? I just went through my first winter with chickens . . I live near Central (mega cold). I had a white light for 8 hours/day and they layed well all winter. I, too, used a red light at night when it was super cold (most of the time). I never let my coop get...

    North to Alaska!

This is some great advice! I see you are in Alaska but what is your temp range where you are - "coaxing" them outside? I do the same but they are totally NOT interested if is below 20 degrees. I love the greenhouse idea. Do you have a huge permanent greenhouse or a Menards/Sam's club 10x10...

I have only been through one "chicken winter" so I'm not real knowledgeable but have friends who are. They tell me that unless you want/need baby chicks it is best to not have a rooster. Tough on the hens. Logically, though, seems like it would give them something to "think", "worry" about...

It does get into the 90's occasionally here. Locals say it's unusual but . . still happening. I had 3 unexplained deaths during the heat. Like heart attacks or something. Just not having very good LUCK with chickens. Thanks for the advice. I have never heard of either breed but that...
