That's what I've heard about shipping eggs too. That's why I got cheap ones, but with shipping it still ended up being about $1.50 an egg. No pure breeds either, those go for a lot even on eBay.
I bought some on eBay. They are in the incubator now, so I don't know about fertility.
I'd suggest going on Facebook and check if someone in your area setup a barter/sale group for locals, and ask there. Or check Craig's list. Even if someone isn't offering, you can make a request ad. Some...
Some kind of netting over the top is good. Along with regular predators like hawks and owls I'd keep an eye out for ravens too. I don't think they'd bother adults, but they might go for chicks. I'm going to put net on my run, but I would rather have a wooden framed run with a more fence like...
Yup, they are beggars too! If they think you have food they will hang around. When I was younger the chickens free ranged in the yard. At the time Mom was installing flooring in the kitchen so we would cook and eat outside. The hens loved noodles and it was all fun and games until the pigs...
Depending on your schedule and how big your coop is, you could give them their dinner in there. Once everyone is in close it up. I think I used to do that, or put some treats in there.
My search question was 'why do owls only eat the head?' so most of they thread was directed to 'why?' rather than 'what?'

This other website says owls too. http://www.avianaquamiser.com/posts/What_killed_my_chicken__63__/
Yup dogs too! We were lucky enough to catch them in the act before too much damage was done.
When I was a kid I remember we has a full flock wipe-out in like 3 days. Just some scattered feathers left, we figured it was a bird of some sort. Once an owl went after the flock. Mom saw it in a...
I have had a Lynx in my yard, but at the time I didn't have any chickens. It checked out the goats and left, I haven't seen it since. I think we lost more chickens to birds of prey rather than ground based predators.
Mine were summer established plants, perhaps that gave them an edge? I think peppers might actually be perennials to a certain extent, so they might have gone into a mild dormant state. My house isn't too cold for the most part, but despite the large windows there isn't enough light. My back...
I agree. My driveway looks great! Perhaps the mosquitos won't be too bothersome. Although fire hazards come to mind, unless is rains all summer. Last time it rained all summer, at work I was mowing mushy fields and at home it was so cold my zucchinis died!
My house is somewhat protected from the wind, so I think I have around 6-8" on the ground. All of the unprotected areas the wind has blown away the snow and left bare ground. I work on the roads and grounds department on Greely, the lack of snow is getting irritating. :(
