I had two hatch normally on their own and had to assist two that were shrink wrapped. The third to hatch really struggled for the first week. Pasty butt, splay leg and droopy wing. It's now happy as a clam, running around with the other chicks, just a little smaller :)
It's really stressful, especially when you have 20 three and four year olds hoping for baby chicks in three weeks! All you can do is your best though, right? Good luck!
I think the temp was too low because I used the thermometer that came with the incubator. Also I have no idea if the humidity was good enough because I just went with the troughs and didn't use a hygrometer. Finally, the temp surged unexpectedly over a weekend when I couldn't get in the...
I start my second hatch tomorrow. My first one was entirely unsuccessful, which the class took really well. Now I'm doing it with my daughter's preschool. Wish me luck!
I have to say the response from the kids and their parents has been amazing. They've all been very grateful, thought it was a good lesson for the kids. The kids just said - ok next time! They raised butterflies at the same time and those were successful so that helped. Overall I don't feel too...
thanks everyone! I am leaving it until 3pm on day 25 but then I'd have to choose between leaving them until day 28 or taking them out as they're at the school. Any thoughts on that?
Day 24 with no action. We officially give up at 3pm tomorrow but in my heart I've pretty much given up now. I never really got an answer about the float test but depending on the different blogs I read I either had no viable eggs yesterday, one viable or six. Sigh.
thanks! I made their run pretty huge so I think between that and the amount I spend in the garden we should get by.
I want to get a dog some day but I don't think I'm ready for the committment yet - I have a 4 and 6 year old and it's enough for me LOL
Oh no, I'm sorry!! We have coyotes, raccoons, hawks, dogs and eagles to worry about here, in the middle of the city. My girls won't be able to come out of their run unless I'm out there with them. When I get some, of course. Sigh.
Hi, sorry for the delay!
Candled. No activity/movement, no internal pip. No chirping or tapping in response to my tapping. Air sacs had grown since Monday and the chicks too, but not totally full yet (up to air sac). Could see one was malpositioned (feet at air sac). 2 looked like goners...
I agree. I'm not giving up on them, I'll go to day 25 before that. Tomorrow if they haven't pipped I will try candling and if that's inconclusive I'll try the float test, but only with no internal pip. Friday will have to be the end as I'll then be out for the weekend again.
So have you got to...
thanks for the tip, I was wondering if I should do that this morning but couldn't get a response back fast enough before I had to leave for work - I can't get back into the school until tomorrow at 7am. If they haven't pipped then I'll candle and go from there. I was afraid to open the bator...
