One of my chickens went broody for the first time this past week. She's eating and drinking, and will leave the coop if prompted. She' s not aggressive and she's not breaking the other chicken's eggs, nor is she chasing her out of the nest. Getting fertile eggs for her to hatch is a cute idea, but not really an option (space concerns/I'd get attached to the babies). I'm not really missing the eggs, since for me they're pets first and egg factories second.

My question is, can I just wait out her broodiness, or do I have to 'break' her? Will she stop on her own, or will she just stay in broody mode indefinitely until there are babies or I make her stop?

When a chicken goes broody she also stops egg production. The incubation period for a chicken is 21 days and that's how long she'll probably wait it out. Hens also eat and drink less and lose a lot of weight. Which is not good especially if there are no babies to incubate. Which leads me to my answer; I would remove her yourself. Start by pulling her out of the nesting box and simply placing her outside. Watch to see if she goes back. If she does take her out again and place her in a wire cage with food and water in the grass when it's sunny out and place that either inside or outside the pen. The change of scenery might help.
