My girls are now 19 weeks this Friday. I have had an egg the past three days, they are small and only one egg a day. I went out this morning to clean up the droppings board and let the girls out into the run and noticed that there was a soft shell egg under the roost bar. I also noticed that there was a watery substance on the board, I use river sand on the bottom of the board fyi. It smelt like urine? A large amount for a chicken? There is not anyway that a rat, cat, or any other animal could have gotten in there? Could that have come from a chicken? Why a soft shell egg? Is that normal when the girls first lay?

I have oyster shell available for the girls, but none have taken to it very much. I also switched them from medicated feed to layer feed three days ago.

what do you all think?

Don't worry, the same thing happened to one of my buff orpingtons. Its just because they've never layed an egg before and the shell-making thingy hasn't fully developed yet... tomorrow the bird will likely be laying normal eggs

I got another soft egg this morning. It kind of looks and feels like the shell isn't there but the layer of film on the inside is what she is producing. I think I have two girls that are laying and one of them has only produced soft shell eggs. I will not worry until she is a month old or so and ill wait it out to see if she will start producing the correct eggs. I cant tell which hen is the one doing this either

Mine don't like oyster shells That much either. I dry out my egg shells after I use them and crunch them into small pieces to give to the girls. They love it and they also get their calcium because the eggs shells are calcium. Hope this helped!

The poultry experts at MSU say that crushed eggshells dissolve to quickly in the bird to provide calcium in the early morning hours when she is making the eggshell. I have oyster shell available, and they eat what they need. Mary

Got three small eggs today and all were hardshell! I think the one that was laying te soft shell laid a solid one today, thank goodness! So 3 or the 4 are laying now

that will be probably at least a dozen eggs a week! Right on! What do you do with your extra eggs?
I'm thinking of donating them to the food bank.

One of my RIRs about 6 1/2 mo old gave a double yolk egg a few days ago in the nest and a soft shell egg outside the day after. Well this morning she layed another large double yolk egg in the nest, but just now about 7 pm, plopped out a soft shell egg the others pecked it open before I could grab it and a minute after layed another soft shell egg. I'm not sure if her body is working out the kinks or if there is a serious problem. I've been watching them because I noticed watery poops and some that look as if they had blood in them. Has anyone one heard of them doing this? Thanks for any feed back.
