Any guesses as to breed? Gender?

It's either a Barred Rock (could be either gender) or a male Black Sex Link chick (female BSL chicks do not have the white spot on top of the head). Since both are barred, you won't know which until it has feathered out. I would suggest posting its pic again at that time on our What Breed or Gender is This? section.

If it's the free chick from MMM, it should be a cuckoo Marans, not a Rock (or a Dominique, if it has a rose comb). Can you get a pic looking down at the chick from the top so we can see the head spot size and shape?

That's another possibility although the legs look a bit on the yellow side to me in the pic. Maybe it's just my eyes, or the fact that it's a hatchery quality bird.

On my monitor the legs look more white, and I think I can see a little leg feathering.

Not at all. Some breeds are feather legged, and that would include both sexes. The sparse leg feathering could indicate the chick is a cuckoo Marans since most barred breeds do not have leg feathering.
