I was wondering if I could get pygmy goats, and would like to know more about it. Please share facts and comments. THANKS!

Pygmies have gentle stomachs and if they overeat they will become obese and possibly overwork their hearts. Also, they need fresh water and the water should be changed daily. They love to run around and they love treats so give them a nice sized area with a run-in shed, shade, and don't give them too much treats however much they look cute. Also, fresh hay is needed to wear down their teeth and fresh straw so they can sleep comfortably. Straw should be abundant in the winter. Put the straw in their shed to wear down the draft and such. Pygmies can't be alone as they are herd animals, but it's worth it!!
 
We currently have 4 goats. The adult male is a Spanish/Boor, the adult female is a pygmy and their offspring (1 male/1 female) are a mix of the two adults.

This is the 2nd time the adults have produced offspring and the pygmy is such a good mother. She's had no problems with pregnancy or delivery and takes good care of the kids. She's friendly to us and hasn't had any trouble with us handling her kids. She has a wonderful disposition and loves to be brushed.

Hi nice to know that some other people on the sight are interested in goats.
We have 4 angora goats.
They are very friendly to people but we have had a lot of problems with bullying and our smallest goat became really ill.
I have learned 2 main things about goats they are fussy about what they eat and when they are board they are mean to each other.
Our vet has advised us to give them things to do in their paddock, they now have a ramp to run up, a big log to jump on and an old tractor tyre that I stuff with hay so they have to work to get it.
We hope to eventually get a decent fleece from them but it all seems rather hard work !

Hi, for me it all depends on if you feed hay or not. If you plan on feeding all hay year round, then you could keep pygmies in smaller spaces. If you want the pasture to support them and only feed hay in the winter then i would say you could keep 10 pygmies on a half acre. On an off topic note, hi NorthFL, you may remember me from my goat thread about a year ago. I just wanted to say hi and i hope your goats are doing great!

Hi, yes, they are doing great! I am showing boer goats through 4H on a state and county level which is tons of fun! I hope after high school to start raising a whole herd of ABGA boers and showing them in open shows and maybe even the national boer show! But at least when you go with pygmies, you don't need a ton of land. Not only do they eat a lot but they need room to roam to stay in shape(judges are picky about muscling and that kind of stuff).
