Hello we are approaching 19 weeks with this Black Australorp. From what I understand about the feathers I am thinking that this is a roo. We are holding out hope because there hasn't been any crowing. Hoping for some input from all of the experts here.

Harder to see in the blur of photo, but I think I see saddles on the back.

Yes that would make this a rooster.

Not all roosters crow early....at 19 weeks, you should expect to hear one soon.

Roosters can delay crowing due to a lot of things from being lower on the rooster pecking order, or simply being the only rooster and not feeling need to crow yet.

Thank you for your response. Sorry about the picture quality. Took them tonight after they had settled down, but this one still kept moving when I was trying to take the pictures.

There is an australorp thread as well which would also be a good place to ask as they will have seen them at this age many times.

They do look like pointy roo neck feathers though. are they saddle feathers coming in too?

I think there are saddle feathers. The neck feathers confuse me some because to me they look the same on our other birds too. A couple of those are black sex links, so they should be safe pullets. These are our first chickens. I appreciate you taking the time to respond.
