So I just acquired a new hen and I would like to play the breed guessing game. So long story short, I acquired this hen when I traded a rooster for her (yes, super lucky to have someone willing to give me a hen for a rooster, I mean seriously who does that hahaha). Now the friend that gave me this hen let's all of his chickens free-range on his property so I know at one point in time he had specific breeds but now they are all inter-bred to my understanding. I was wondering if anyone could tell me what they think this chicken might be and I apologize in advance for the poor photo quality, she would not stand still for anything!

She has not started to lay yet. Not sure if she has started before I acquired her but again she free-ranged so I'm not sure there is a way to tell unless you watched her lay.

So a newbie question, besides not being able to get an idea on laying rate and other health issues, what other downsides are there to having a mixed breed chicken if any at all?

There really aren't many health issues that are breed specific in chickens, at least not for the dual purpose type birds, which your girl is.

there really aren't downsides IMO to a mixed breed. They're pretty and they lay well, that's honestly about what most of us want in our flock. You can't show them. You can't hatch purebred chicks. That's about it, far as I'm concerned.

Can you tell my flock is full of mixed breed birds?
