French frogs

Sorry guys, took a little break to do some remodeling on the profile. Somehow, though, I seem to have misplaced about 14,000 or so posts. Oh well.
Our farm is getting bigger, with a little more recognition, so I'm going to take advantage of a little free advertising :D
I'm signing on late, so just a quick update: Friday we hatched 17 of 19 AMs. The last two DIS. I'm not sure what happened, but 15 of the other 17 were extremely healthy. The last 2 were severe stargazers, but thanks to Ravyn and Nutridrench, they were spared culling and were totally fine 24 hours later.
Sunday I set 13 Jack and 13 Johnny eggs. I'm really anxious about this weekend's candle, and really hoping Sidewing will update his results as well.
Ok, that's it for now.
10 of Jack's are heading for lockdown on Friday
BTW: I would prefer if you still called us SC and Mrs. Flock. I'm used to it ;)

Welcome back SC and Mrs. Flock. I'm glad to see you guys!!! ;) :hugs

He is heavily breeding one of them, and 2 sets in a row are zero fertility. I give up
I know...

Here is what I did. I had to trim the rump feathers by the vents of the hens and the rooster. To help him hit his mark. As the one hen he over mounts I would move her out for a bit so he has a chance to check out his other options. Then give it a few days, before testing or checking for fertility. I would give the one hen a break for a while seeing that's "his" favorite lady!!! ;)

Caught up. I just woke after being up for 28 hours straight. It's year end and I had to do an inventory count over night.

SC, I think the route you've decided on makes the most sense, but sorry it's going to set you back a year.

Hi everyone else.

You betcha!  He needs the exercise now anyway, right?  :D

I'm not saying to be dishonest at all, but who's to say he won't be better with other hens?  Unless you have him tested.  Disclose that he didn't produce for you, but anything is possible.

Never mind, I'll give ya 5 bucks for him and throw him in with my LavOrps.  :thumbsup

ETA - My line of thinking was if you considered giving him 6 more months, then maybe he has some potential, but if you feel sure he can't do the job, then its all moot.

Seriously, what will you do with him?

SC, I agree with WV. I wouldn't get rid of Johnny just yet. I think your jumping the gun. I know it's the pits. I don't think your giving him enough time...none of your options are ideal and Johnny's already there. As nice as he is just wait...I know...but...if you give him 3 more months he may become very fertile, Is it common for roosters to shoot blanks?? If not, relax..give him more time...! Your in love with that rooster, he's very nice!! And he's also probably several generations of just black on black breeding..? Maybe let Johnny be and sell more EEs this spring. Johnny may turn into a little stud muffin, a fertile little stud muffin in just a few short months...try to relax!
This too shall pass! Just my thoughts...

I have never had a rooster that was 0% after March. His brother is 95%, and I'm losing 3-4 eggs per day that I could be incubating. I have some very nice blues from Jack coming up, and I need to check the girls to see if they are carrying the leakage. I'm going to sell the black rooster, put the girls with the splash, then split back to a blue this winter for blacks next year. It's not ideal, but it's a great learning experience for an aspiring breeder

It's been in the mid 70s for two weeks, and his brother has been 90+% since February...
Johnny has had a couple of 25% batches, but the last 2 are zero. He's getting worse, not better

Something seems off SC....maybe you should trim them all just to see..just once! Swallow your pride and pull out the clippers...or scissors.

Sleep on all the advice and your decision for sure..?

Agreed!!!! I just set my eggs 2 days ago. I can check real quick to see if it worked. When I broke open some eggs they were all fertile but one. So it went from 0% to 75%.
