Surviving Minnesota!

Morning all on this terrible morning..

My front wheel bearing went out on my truck so I get to spend the next couple days digging myself out of the hole and getting back to where I was yesterday, before it went out.....

arrrrgggh!!!

I just came from Mom's. Her computer "quit working". I told her she might have too many pictures on it.

She said she did not have any........

I found 100 GB worth of junk pictures and files, so many I do not have enough free space to delete them. I am doing a restore for her.... Mothers and computers do not mix!

If you give your mother a computer, beware, it will haunt you forever!

Good morning chickeners!
Interesting conversation about the duck eggs. Learned a ton! Curious - what happened to the dead mama duck? Was it left to be eaten? And what I learned is don't mess with mother nature.

Put up a temporary fence yesterday with two 50' foot wire fences for Tom Hanks and his flock. They get to pasture; it is around the lilacs so they have plenty of cover; i like this. However, I will not have time to work on a type of temporary, transportable fence until next week. Lottsa ground for them to graze and dig - not like in the 4 x 8 chicken tractor.

Lilacs?????

Lots of Lilacs??

I need more Lilacs. 50 years ago my Mom dug all except one bush out and I so want more. I am going to start grabbing the little ones and moving them to pots for a year to get more going.

Chainsaw duck. Did you see the mother dead -- actual body and feathers? Or you just saw the nest unattended? I've reread your posts a few times. To come upon a nest by chance is a cool thing. But leave it be. I can't help but feel that 3 visits to the nest may have made a trail and introduction to predators.

Or momma duck just picked a bad spot to nest period. Some relation of ours that live right in Minneapolis had a hen waddle in to their back garden and set up a duck nest for brooding. She luckily had great supporters of her efforts -- but it could have been a poor choice for her with the wrong kind of neighbor.

Okay - come dig out runners. I have all those along side the shop - some different colors too. Next week or over the memorial day weekend.

Just got the 4H booklet in the mail!

For egg production can you show hybrids?
Cause I know the first time I ever saw White Californians was at 4H when someone had 3 pullets there

Ok... This is most likely false. They work for the government (they do dont they?)and the government wants our money. SO unless there is a really nice warden by them u r probably going to get fined.
Yes, they work for the government, but most wardens aren't excited to fine everyone. It's possible that the wardens around here happen to be the nicest and most understanding in the region, but I am sure there are others.

Nathan Believe me when I tell you are way off base on this. If the eggs are from Wild Mallards you cannot possess them, raising them is possessing them. It is illegal to feed wild game animals. Ducks are game. I am pretty well acquainted with the laws and Game wardens, judges, prosecutors and the entire system.

The safest thing to do is put them back. Your "pretty sure" is not an absolute. Putting them back is by far a better bet.

Also the reason for leaving young animals/eggs and nests alone is just as I said. The wildlife managers know a nest of eggs. or young duck, animals of any kind are not going to make it. However, taking them and trying to save them means another animal has to die to feed the predators. If you leave the one bound to die out there, you might be saving the life of one that has a chance to life with a parent.
I know you can't possess them legally, but after they have already been taken and are incubating, I don't think they would force him to return the eggs to the nest. As I said before it's just my opinion from what I know about the game wardens in my area.

Your interested in saving other ducks?

Well that would make sense, but now that the eggs are developing it would be cruel just to leave them now.

Cool. Can't wait! So far I'm taking the 2 standard cochins, 3 egg production pullets, 1 frizzle cochin bantam cock.
And maybe a Plymouth rock
